    March 9, 2017, marked the Susquehanna River Basin Commission’s first day in the field on Swatara Creek, a tributary of the Susquehanna River in east central Pennsylvania, for a project in collaboration with the U.S. Army Corps of Engineers, Baltimore District, to provide information to the Federal Emergency Management Agency Region III that will help FEMA update their flood risk maps.

    Water reached a 500-year event level... a storm with only a .2 percent chance of occurring in any given year. In all, 12 of 64 parishes in Louisiana were declared major federal disaster areas.

  • New online maps show storm-based flood potential along Potomac, Anacostia rivers

    New digital maps allow government leaders, emergency managers, and the public to view potential flood impacts during high-water events along the Potomac and Anacostia rivers throughout the District of Columbia, Northern Virginia and nearby communities. The maps are now live on the National Weather Service’s web site.

  • U.S. Army Corps of Engineers, Buffalo District is Active in Urban Search and Rescue

    The U.S. Army Corps of Engineers has approximately 30 volunteers in the Urban Search & Rescue (US&R) program and five of the volunteers reside within the Buffalo District. The cadre of Structures Specialists provide technical expertise in the area of structural engineering. The deployment of Structures Specialists is imperative in disaster situations in which disaster victims may be trapped in collapsed buildings and rescuers require assistance with securing safe access to locate them.

    Los Angeles District Commander Col. Kirk Gibbs joined water resource agencies, led by the California Department of Water Resources, at a Sept. 9 signing ceremony here during the Floodplain Management Association’s annual conference to formally establish California as the 40th state to form a Silver Jackets program.
