  • Not just an exercise: USACE has a tabletop exercise for Shallow Land Disposal Area

    Benjamin Franklin said, “Tell me and I forget, teach me and I may remember, involve me and I learn.” Getting involved is precisely what the U.S. Army Corps of Engineers (USACE) Buffalo and Pittsburgh districts, and their Memorandum of Understanding (MOU) agency partners, did, as they spent approximately eight hours ensuring that every “i” was dotted and every “t” was crossed during a Shallow Land Disposal Area (SLDA) tabletop exercise (TTX) preparing for the start of physical remediation after a nearly 15-year interruption. They discussed work plans, processes, procedures, and contract lists, and used graphic, videos – but more importantly, they got involved.

  • ORTC construction will reinforce readiness, lethality for troops rotating through USAG Bavaria

    Early signs of construction for the Operational Readiness Training Complex are becoming more visible each day at Grafenwoehr, Germany. As of April, utility lines have been laid and roads have been paved, outlining the first of many phases in a multi-year construction schedule. The ORTC will ultimately support a full brigade of Soldiers and equipment, meeting operational mission requirements and serving as a deterrent to adversaries while enhancing quality of life.

  • ERDC and USM equip the military with new airfield mat coating technology

    Recently, members of Marine Wing Support Squadron 271, 2nd Marine Aircraft Wing, and researchers from the University of Southern Mississippi participated in an Airfield Matting Resurfacing experiment at the U.S. Army Engineer Research and Development Center (ERDC). AM2 matting is an aluminum matting system developed in the 1960s to provide temporary aircraft landing surfaces in austere locations around the world.

  • ERDC Permafrost Tunnel hosts biological agent exercise

    A three-day, multi-agency exercise took place at the U.S. Army Engineer Research and Development Center’s (ERDC) Permafrost Tunnel Research Facility in Fox, Alaska. The 82nd Chemical Reconnaissance Detachment, along with representatives from ERDC’s Cold Regions Research and Engineering Laboratory (CRREL), Defense Threat Reduction Agency (DTRA), U.S. Army Development Command Chemical Biological Center (DEVCOM), U.S. Special Operations Command (USSOCOM), 11th Airborne Division Command Surgeon, 103d Weapons of Mass Destruction-Civil Support Team, and Naval Research Laboratory, conducted the exercise to test Soldiers' ability to quickly and accurately sequence bacteria in extreme cold and arctic conditions.
