This year, the U.S. Army Corps of Engineers was selected by the Department of the Army to be the lead command in planning and coordinating the WOCC with the host organization, Career Communications Group, Inc.

    In 2010, Dr. Peggy Wright was appointed by Dr. Jeffery Holland, director of the U.S. Army Engineer Research and Development Center (ERDC), as the assistant director for Human Capital (HC), and was tasked with building and implementing an outstanding program for student outreach in the fields of science, technology, engineering and mathematics (STEM).
  • What is the Corps in the Classroom Program?

    Corps in the Classroom provides students the opportunity to interact one-on-one with USACE Galveston District employees in a variety of STEM fields to ask questions about their professions, receive encouragement to pursue STEM-related careers and have the chance to meet women and minority professionals working in STEM occupations.

    Teacher involvements have been one of the keys to the STEM program’s success. These activities, which make optimal use of vendors who specialize in STEM education training programs, work closely with Department of Defense laboratories across the nation to integrate science and engineers into the training process, providing instruction on modern learning tools and strategies so that teachers and S&Es located near DOD labs can successfully work together.

    Leaders and staff from the Southwestern Division, U.S. Army Corps of Engineers, participated in a STEM Roundtable at Dallas’ Townview School of Science and Engineering on Sept. 28, discussing one-on-one with students and faculty the importance of Science, Technology, Engineering, and Math. The event, which was entitled “Serving our Nation through Science, Technology, Engineering and Math”, was held at the Dallas magnet school recently recognized with the Intel’s School of Distinction Award for the best high school math program in the country.
