  • Chittenden Locks announce garden reopening

    The Hiram M. Chittenden (Ballard) Locks will reopen the Carl S. English Jr. Botanical Garden to visitors, Oct. 7, at 10 a.m. Facilities, including the visitors center, and access across the locks’ bridges will remain closed until further notice.
  • Temporary closure of Old Post Road Park Camping Area

    The U.S. Army Corps of Engineers will temporarily close the campground at Old Post Road Park near Russellville, Arkansas from Oct. 15 through Dec. 31.
  • Below average runoff continues in the upper Missouri River basin

    September precipitation was well-below normal in the Missouri River Basin.  As a result, September runoff in the upper Missouri River Basin above Sioux City, Iowa was 69% of average.  Since January 1, precipitation in the upper Basin is well-below normal.  The National Weather Service’s Climate Prediction Center (CPC) is forecasting that below-normal precipitation will continue in October.  The 2020 calendar year runoff forecast for the upper Basin, updated on October 1, is 30.2 million acre-feet (MAF), 117% of average. Average annual runoff for the upper Basin is 25.8 MAF.
  • 20-053 Anglers and recreationalists beware of fluctuating water levels on the Clearwater and the North Fork of the Clearwater

    Ahsahka, Idaho. – Dworshak Dam powerhouse will conduct testing on one of their hydropower units on October 13 and 14, from 8 a.m. until 5 p.m. The test will increase the flow from the powerhouse, resulting in fluctuations of water depth and flow on both the Clearwater and the North Fork of the Clearwater rivers.
  • LA District, California Army National Guard to conduct flood-fighting demonstration Oct. 8 at Whittier Narrows Dam

    The U.S. Army Corps of Engineers Los Angeles District and the California National Guard are partnering to conduct a Super Sand Bag Placement functional exercise at the Whittier Narrows Dam in Montebello, California. The exercise will include the use of a U.S. Army UH-60M Black Hawk helicopter flown by a crew with the California National Guard's Army Aviation Support Facility No. 1, based in Joint Forces Training Base, Los Alamitos, California. The California National Guard will conduct a sling-load operation that will place sandbags into a simulated breach of the levee system at Whittier Narrows Dam to demonstrate the joint flood-fighting capabilities of the Corps of the California National Guard.
  • Indiana Harbor dredging begins

    Dredging began at Indiana Harbor yesterday and will continue through the fall of 2020, a continuation of the dredging that stopped in 2019 for the winter season. The contractors, a joint venture with Kokosing Construction Company, Ohio, and O'Brien and Gere, Illinois, will dredge approximately 150,000 to 200,000 cubic yards in 2020. The navigation project consists of a harbor channel ranging in depth from 27 to 29 feet low water datum, and two canals with depths of 22 feet. The project includes the operation and maintenance of the East Chicago, Indiana, confined disposal facility.

    The U.S. Army Corps of Engineers, Omaha District announced Friday that spillway gate maintenance will take place on Gavins Point Dam through Oct. 16, which may impact anglers in the area for paddlefish season.

    The U.S. Army Corps of Engineers, Little Rock District is resuming the collection of fees at several day use recreation areas. Fee collections were suspended earlier this year when recreation areas were closed due to COVID-19 precautions.
