Banner year for Formerly Used Defense Sites Program
WASHINGTON, D.C. -- It has been a banner year for the Formerly Used Defense Sites (FUDS) program. The program, which restores environmental conditions at sites formerly used by the Department of Defense to build and defend our Nation, successfully obligated 100 percent of its authorized $243.1 million budget and met all major milestones for fiscal year 2017, advancing cleanup efforts across the country.

Mobile District water expert helps Florida residents recover after Hurricane Irma
In the wake of Hurricane Irma’s devastation, few things are more important to affected Florida residents than drinking water and wastewater. With this in mind, the U.S. Army Corps of Engineers, Mobile District, prepositioned water expert Mark Crawford, in Tallahassee, Fla., even before the storm hit.

Pioneer in military use of nuclear power provides insight on facility to be decommissioned
Retired Lt. Gen. Ernest Graves was just a major when he was assigned to the SM-1, the first-of-its-kind nuclear power plant that the U.S. Army Corps of Engineers was building on Fort Belvoir in the late 1950s. At the time, Major Graves was tasked with overseeing the final stages of construction, then operating and training the staff for the reactor. The SM-1 was the first nuclear reactor in the country to generate power connected to the commercial grid when it achieved its first criticality in April 1957. Sixty years later, a 93-year-old Graves and his wife, Nancy, visited the facility to discuss its history with professionals from the U.S. Army Corps of Engineers and other Department of Defense agencies charged with handling nuclear-related missions for the military.

First Blue Roof Being Installed in the Virgin Islands
The first residential temporary roof made of blue plastic sheeting was installed today on the island of St. Thomas in the U.S. Virgin Islands. The program, available to qualified homeowners and known as Operation Blue Roof, can make some damaged structures habitable again until more permanent repairs can be made.

The Jan. 7 Los Angeles County wildfires debris removal operation was one of our largest, most challenging missions. More than 1,400 USACE personnel deployed from across the nation and from our district to support debris removal operations. /6

But we did not do this alone. The success of this important mission was the result of strong partnerships with FEMA, Cal OES, LA County, local governments and impacted communities. /5

To date, USACE has removed more than 2.6 million tons of debris — the equivalent of more than 218,000 truckloads. /4

We are proud of our efforts, alongside our partners, to rapidly come to the aid of our fellow citizens in their time of need. In just six months, more than 9,500 properties were cleared — making this the fastest, large-scale wildfire debris removal in USACE history. /3

After the devastating Los Angeles wildfires in January 2025, the U.S. Army Corps of Engineers was laser-focused on removing immediate hazards to public health and safety, and supporting economic recovery by removing structural ash, debris and foundations. /2

Prepositioning of debris removal experts accelerates Hurricane Irma recovery operations
The U.S. Army Corps of Engineers preemptively mobilized Mobile District Emergency Management Chief Hubert “Bo” Ansley to the U.S. Virgin Islands, and civil engineer Herb Bullock to Puerto Rico, Sept. 4, to accelerate Hurricane Irma recovery operations. At the time, Hurricane Irma was still two days away, but the Corps of Engineers made it a priority to get someone on the ground to begin initial damage assessments, immediately following the storm.
