2014 Emergency Manager of the Year
Kim Adkins, Readiness and Contingency Operations, operations chief for the Northwestern Division was recently recognized as 2014 Emergency Manager of the Year by the Chief of Engineers, U.S. Army Corps of Engineers Headquarters. Adkins recently returned to the Northwestern Division after spending the last four years working as the POD Civil Emergency Program Manager for the Readiness and Contingency Operations Division. Since returning to NWD, she has deployed to Washington State in support of the wildfires that struck the eastern part of the state in August.

The U.S. Army Engineering and Support Center, Huntsville welcomed more than 30 teens and staff from the Redstone Youth Center Oct. 6, for a presentation on Science, Technology, Engineering and Math (STEM) concepts.

Lower Santa Ana River receives flood management project of the year award
The Los Angeles Section of the American Society of Civil Engineers presented its 2015 flood management project of the year award to the Army Corps of Engineers Los Angeles District for its Lower Santa Ana River Reach 9 Phase 2B project during ceremonies held Oct. 3 at The Proud Bird restaurant, adjacent to Los Angeles International Airport.

The Jan. 7 Los Angeles County wildfires debris removal operation was one of our largest, most challenging missions. More than 1,400 USACE personnel deployed from across the nation and from our district to support debris removal operations. /6

But we did not do this alone. The success of this important mission was the result of strong partnerships with FEMA, Cal OES, LA County, local governments and impacted communities. /5

To date, USACE has removed more than 2.6 million tons of debris — the equivalent of more than 218,000 truckloads. /4

We are proud of our efforts, alongside our partners, to rapidly come to the aid of our fellow citizens in their time of need. In just six months, more than 9,500 properties were cleared — making this the fastest, large-scale wildfire debris removal in USACE history. /3

After the devastating Los Angeles wildfires in January 2025, the U.S. Army Corps of Engineers was laser-focused on removing immediate hazards to public health and safety, and supporting economic recovery by removing structural ash, debris and foundations. /2

Army Corps of Engineers waives day use fees at recreation areas on Veterans Day
WASHINGTON – The U.S. Army Corps of Engineers (USACE) announced today that it will waive day use fees for veterans, active and reserve component service members, and their families at the more than 2,800 USACE-operated recreation areas nationwide on Veterans Day, November 11.

The U.S. Army Corps of Engineers (USACE) today announced it will open the Access to Water Resource Data - CWMS Data Dissemination (CWMS) website for public access beginning 23 October at 1:00 p.m. EDT.
