Huntsville Center plays key role in South Carolina remediation project
Work to clean up former Camp Croft, a Formerly Used Defense Site, began following the April 1 contract between U.S. Army Corps of Engineers Savannah District, and a joint venture of Weston Solutions, Inc., of Peachtree Corners, Georgia, and Zapata Inc., of Charlotte, North Carolina.

Hydro Survey mission a key part of harbor operations
The Brunswick and Savannah Harbors are essential to supporting the nation’s commerce. The U.S. Army Corps of Engineers Savannah District Hydro Survey section has responsibility for ensuring these and other waterways remain passable.

DMCAs – Savannah’s solution for placing dredged material
The Corps of Engineers has been dredging sediment from the Savannah River since the 19th century. A crucial requirement for maintaining a deepened harbor is having a designated placement area for sediment. The Corps calls these designated areas “dredged material containment areas” (DMCA). And since the Corps must dredge miles of the Savannah River year after year, large containment areas are required.

Corps lakes offer Christmas trees a second chance
Evergreen trees aren’t typically considered aquatic vegetation, but if they’re used as Christmas trees in the Savannah River Basin, chances are they’ll continue “bearing fruit” under water. Rather than have old Christmas trees go to the landfill, rangers with the U. S. Army Corps of Engineers reservoirs at Hartwell and J. Strom Thurmond lakes collect the trees in December and January each year to make fish habitats in the reservoirs.

The Jan. 7 Los Angeles County wildfires debris removal operation was one of our largest, most challenging missions. More than 1,400 USACE personnel deployed from across the nation and from our district to support debris removal operations. /6

But we did not do this alone. The success of this important mission was the result of strong partnerships with FEMA, Cal OES, LA County, local governments and impacted communities. /5

To date, USACE has removed more than 2.6 million tons of debris — the equivalent of more than 218,000 truckloads. /4

We are proud of our efforts, alongside our partners, to rapidly come to the aid of our fellow citizens in their time of need. In just six months, more than 9,500 properties were cleared — making this the fastest, large-scale wildfire debris removal in USACE history. /3

After the devastating Los Angeles wildfires in January 2025, the U.S. Army Corps of Engineers was laser-focused on removing immediate hazards to public health and safety, and supporting economic recovery by removing structural ash, debris and foundations. /2

Officials announce master plan update comment period for Hartwell Lake
The public may read and comment on a proposed master plan update for the Hartwell Lake project as officials consider changes to the current guidance on operation of the project’s recreational, environmental, land and wildlife management. The public comment period closes at 12 noon, May 28.

Corps of Engineers restricts use of Savannah River campgrounds, day-use areas
SAVANNAH, Ga. – Officials with the Savannah District, U.S. Army Corps of Engineers announced Wednesday restrictions on camping and campsite and day-use area availability at its Savannah River reservoirs in order to limit interpersonal contact during the COVID19 pandemic. • Effective immediately all visitor centers are closed to the public until further notice.
