Initial public scoping a success for Lewis and Clark Lake, Gavins Point Dam master plan update
Outdoor recreation enthusiasts will reap the future benefits at Lewis and Clark Lake recreation area in Yankton, South Dakota, after the Gavins Point Dam project master plan update, currently underway, is complete — the plan was last revised in 2004.

When you’re talking about the U.S. Army Corps of Engineers’ six mainstem dams on the Missouri River, the word small is a relative term. While the dams and their powerhouses vary in size, they are all imposing structures. For instance, Gavins Point Dam, near Yankton, South Dakota, is the smallest of the six, yet it took 7 million cubic yards of earth to build and its three Kaplan generators are capable of generating electricity for 68,000 homes. This makes it that much more ironic that something as small as a zebra mussel could give it such big problems.

Crest Road to close Feb. 9 for maintenance
The U.S. Army Corps of Engineers, Omaha District announced that Crest Road, which crosses Gavins Point Dam near Yankton, South Dakota, will be closed Feb. 9, from 9 a.m. to 12 p.m. for maintenance. People are asked to take an alternate route during the closure.

Gavins Point releases increased slightly ahead of colder temperatures
The U.S. Army Corps of Engineers increased Gavins Point releases from 17,000 cubic feet per second to 19,000 cfs at noon Friday. The National Weather Service’s forecast indicates the lower Missouri River basin will experience extreme cold temperatures for the next 7-10 days. The much colder temperatures have the potential to cause or excaserbate ice formation on tributaries and the mainstem of the lower Missouri River.

Gavins Point Dam releases reduced to winter release rate
The U.S. Army Corps of Engineers began reducing the Gavins Point releases to the winter release rate on Nov. 24, marking the end of flow support for the 2020 Missouri River navigation season. “Releases from Gavins Point Dam were reduced from 34,000 cubic feet per second to 17,000 cfs,” said John Remus, Chief of the Missouri River Water Management Division. “Releases from Gavins Point will be adjusted this winter as needed to lessen the impacts of river ice formation on water intakes in the lower river.” Based on the Sept. 1 System storage, Gavins Point Dam winter releases will be at least 17,000 cfs.

Public scoping period to begin for Gavins Point Dam, Lewis and Clark Lake master plan; virtual public meeting scheduled
OMAHA, Neb. – The U.S. Army Corps of Engineers, Omaha District will be hosting a virtual public scoping meeting on Tuesday, Dec. 15, at 6:00 p.m. This meeting will kick off the public scoping and comment period for the update and revision of the Gavins Point Dam, Lewis and Clark Lake master plan.
