  • Burnsville Lake Cleanup

    The U.S. Army Corps of Engineers at Burnsville Lake is committed to keeping the lake clean and safe. This winter, Maintenance Mechanic Jason Meadows, along with employees of the maintenance contractor, Misfit Landscaping, tackled the major task of removing debris from the lake while the water level was at winter pool. The Burnsville Lake crew removes drift every year, but this cleanup was extremely needed.

  • USACE announces last pass for right-of-way debris pickup in Graves County

    The U.S. Army Corps of Engineers Louisville District, in coordination with FEMA, is announcing the last pass for debris pickup along the right of way in Graves County, Kentucky. Contracted personnel will begin making the last pass tomorrow, March 1. The last day to place storm-related debris on the curb for pick up is Sunday, March 13.

  • Volunteers clean up Lake Cumberland on National Public Lands Day

    SOMERSET, Ky. (Sept. 28, 2021) – More than 120 volunteers collected 276 bags of trash, 53 agricultural and car tires, old dock flotation, a metal railing with stairs, and a doghouse during a community effort to clean up Lake Cumberland on National Public Lands Day.

  • Pittsburgh District to host National Public Lands Day activities at Berlin, M.J. Kirwan, Stonewall Jackson and Youghiogheny reservoirs

    The U.S. Army Corps of Engineers Pittsburgh District is inviting the public to celebrate National Public Lands Day and partake in volunteer activities at Berlin Lake, Michael J. Kirwan Dam, Stonewall Jackson Lake and Youghiogheny River Lake, Saturday, Sept. 25.

  • Wildlife Refuge repair and cleanup project completed ahead of schedule

    Many may be unaware, but one of the U.S. Army Corps of Engineers’ more common missions throughout our country is environmental stewardship. The Memphis District is one of many districts to work closely with other environmental and regulatory agencies to protect existing natural resources, cultural assets, historic sites, and endangered species. In executing this critical mission, the Memphis District, along with hired labor teams, recently completed extensive scour repairs and debris removal to assist with protecting wildlife within the Big Lake National Wildlife Refuge, located in Mississippi County, Arkansas.  

  • Alaska District wins Army Environmental Award for Second Consecutive Year

    Climbing up the hillside of a remote Alaskan island, an old tramway rusts into the ground beneath it. With gnarled rails, the 2,400-foot structure is a remanent of an abandoned radar facility that provided early warning of approaching enemy aircraft during World War II. The tramway is part of a formerly used defense site that the U.S. Army Corps of Engineers – Alaska District worked to clean up the past two summers.

    Earth Day 2021 began as a frosty morning with a layer of snow powdering logs and vehicles. Not even the wind biting at bare skin peeking out from the layers of jackets and face masks stopped volunteers from helping restore and beautify one of the U.S. Army Corps of Engineers Pittsburgh District lakes.

  • Corps moves into 22nd year of cleanup on tribal land in Southeast Alaska

    Nestled 20 miles south of Ketchikan, Alaska, the Metlakatla Indian Community resides on Annette Island.  The tribe opted out of the Alaska Native Claims Settlement Act when Congress passed the legislation in 1971.  Today the Annette Islands Reserve is the only Native American reservation in the state and the tribe lives among the remnants of past military and federal use of the land. Through the Native American Lands Environmental Mitigation Program, the U.S. Army Corps of Engineers – Alaska District and the Metlakatla Indian Community are working together to continue environmental cleanup efforts for the 22nd year.
