  • Munitions cleanup on Culebra advances, increasing safety for public recreational use

    Culebra Island, located 17 miles east of Puerto Rico’s main island, is known for its white, soft sands, which makes it a favorite vacationing spot for tourists seeking to snorkel and find treasures in its waters. Unfortunately, some of those treasures may actually be unexploded ordnance due to the island’s history. The U.S. Army Corps of Engineers executes the FUDS program on behalf of the U.S. Army and Department of Defense. Culebra Island is part of the FUDS inventory and the U.S. Army Corps of Engineers Jacksonville District is responsible for the day to day management and clean-up of munitions on the portions of the island where authorized.

    The U.S. Army Corps of Engineers, Buffalo District, is excited to begin the final remedial action to be conducted at the Lake Ontario Ordnance Works (LOOW) Formerly Utilized Defense Site on July 8th 2019. Site work is expected to finish in Late August 2019, with expected construction completion in September 2019.

  • Round Island Park Oceanside to close May 15

    The U.S. Army Corps of Engineers is conducting a Remedial Investigation at the former Fort Pierce Naval Amphibious Training Base. As a result, Round Island Park Oceanside to include the beach access, will be closed on Wednesday, May 15. Crews will be digging in the area and a safety zone will be established. People are requested to stay out of the safety zone while crews are working.

    FORT SHAFTER, Hawaii (Sept. 28, 2018) -- The U.S. Army Corps of Engineers-Honolulu District (USACE) has completed the final cleanup of unexploded ordnance (UXO) at the Kanahena Point Bombing Target area just north of the southern tip of Maui, a Formerly Used Defense Site (FUDS). The clean-up was completed more than seven decades since the first U.S. Navy practice artillery rounds landed during World War II.
