  • District Offers First STEM Internship

    This summer the District collaborated with the University of New Mexico to launch the District’s first eight-week STEM internship. Civil engineering student Corey Bowen started the internship May 28 and spent her time helping on several on-going design projects.

    NASHVILLE, Tenn. (July 11, 2013) – The U.S. Army Corps of Engineers Nashville District collaborated with the Tennessee State University Engineering Department to mentor science, technology, engineering and math students during a four-week National Summer Transportation Institute program June 9 through July 7, 2013.
  • District engineers use robots for STEM Outreach

    One of the challenges we face as a nation is getting kids excited about Science, Technology, Engineering and Math, or STEM, in order to develop the problem solvers of the future. One way I am helping to meet that challenge is by mentoring a high school robotic team, The Fighting Calculators. The Fighting Calculators participate in the FIRST Robotic Competition, a program where high school students build robots and then compete against other high school teams. FIRST, For Inspiration and Recognition of Science and Technology, encourages STEM education through a suite of robotic competitions, ranging from FIRST Lego League for elementary school kids up to FIRST Robotic Competition for high school teams. FIRST Robotics is the fastest growing sport in the nation. In Minnesota, there are now more high school robotics teams than high school hockey teams!
  • Nashville teachers graduate STEM curriculum with Corps externships

    NASHVILLE, Tenn. (June 28, 2013) – Local high school teachers are using externships with the U.S. Army Corps of Engineers Nashville District to create class curriculum that will challenge students and encourage them to investigate, explore, experiment, problem solve, create and invent.

    For the U.S. Army Corps of Engineers, Jacksonville District, this time of year provides an opportunity to educate future engineers and scientists on the breadth of the district’s work and the contributions it makes to the quality of life in Florida, Puerto Rico and the U.S. Virgin Islands. All Corps team members are representatives for the Corps in their own communities. Every interaction provides a potential opportunity to share information about the district’s programs and projects.
