  • Buffalo District Engineer Recognized as Hard Hat of the Year for Great Lakes and Ohio River Division

    (BUFFALO, N.Y.) June 3, 2025 – Each year, the U.S. Army Corps of Engineers honors excellence in engineering and construction through its prestigious Engineering and Construction Awards Program. Among the various categories recognizing leadership, performance, professional development and community support, the Hard Hat of the Year award celebrates outstanding achievement in construction contract administration management and oversight.

  • Corps of Engineers to Complete Repairs on Erie North Pier

    The U.S. Army Corps of Engineers, Buffalo District awarded a $2 million contract to Chicago-based Architectural Consulting Group, Inc. on May 27 to repair approximately 500 feet of the Erie North Pier this summer. The repair ensures safe navigation for commercial and recreational vessels in Erie Harbor, the flow of commerce across the Great Lakes, and access for shipments of sand to nourish the beaches of Presque Isle State Park.

  • Notice to Boaters: Interruptions to Black Rock Lock Traffic

    The U.S. Army Corps of Engineers, Buffalo District will conduct drilling as part of a geotechnical investigation in the Black Rock Lock from May 29 through June 6, causing an interruption to traffic through the lock. During this period, passage through the lock by recreational vessels will only be available from May 31 through June 1, during regular operating hours.

  • Dredging on the Way for Great Sodus & Oak Orchard

    The U.S. Army Corps of Engineers, Buffalo District awarded a $2 million contract to Michigan-based Dean Marine & Excavating on May 13 to conduct dredging of the federal navigation channels in Great Sodus Bay and Oak Orchard Harbor on Lake Ontario. Dredging of these harbors ensures accessible depths for vessels traveling the Great Lakes and enables recreational boating which supports more than $24 million in business revenue and labor income to the transportation sector combined.

  • Dredging on the Way for Conneaut & Fairport Harbors

    The U.S. Army Corps of Engineers, Buffalo District awarded a total of $9.3 million in contracts to Michigan-based Walsh Service Solutions, LLC on May 13 to conduct dredging of the federal navigation channels in Conneaut and Fairport harbor this summer. Dredging of harbors like these ensures accessible depths for large vessels, the continued flow of commodities across the Great Lakes, and the economic viability of United States waterways.

  • USACE Work Plan Delivers More Than $235M for Infrastructure Improvements, Dredging, Environmental Remediation, and More Across NY, PA, OH

    The U.S. Army Corps of Engineers, Buffalo District received a total of $235.6 million in the Fiscal Year 2025 Work Plan for Army Civil Works to strengthen critical infrastructure across three states and the shoreline of lakes Erie and Ontario and for Manhattan Project Cleanup. The work plan funding adds to the hundreds of millions of dollars for projects and programs the Buffalo District is already delivering in FY25, paving the way for significant civil works, navigation, and environmental improvements across its 38,000 square mile area of responsibility.

  • Dredging Starting in Barcelona Harbor

    Dredging of the Barcelona Harbor federal navigation channel by the U.S. Army Corps of Engineers, Buffalo District and its contractor, Michigan-based Ryba Marine Construction Company will begin May 15. Dredging will clear regular sediment build-up, as well as shoaling from overtopping of the harbor’s west breakwater, ensuring safe navigation and accessible depths for vessels traveling the Great Lakes.

  • Summer Dredging in Ashtabula Continues Building of Wetland Habitat

    The U.S. Army Corps of Engineers, Buffalo District awarded a $1.5 million contract to Toledo-based Geo. Gradel Co. on May 7 to conduct dredging of the federal navigation channel in Ashtabula Harbor. Material dredged will be placed in USACE’s beneficial use project in Ashtabula’s outer harbor, continuing the creation of up to 16.5 acres of new wetland habitat and significantly improving the condition of the harbor for native plant and animal life on Lake Erie.

  • Largest Great Lakes Dredging Operation Starting Fall 2025

    The U.S. Army Corps of Engineers, Buffalo District and its contractor Michigan-based Ryba Marine Construction Company will begin the largest dredging operation on the Great Lakes this fall. This year’s dredging of Toledo Harbor’s federal navigation channel – which requires the largest quantity of material to be dredged from any Great Lakes harbor – is part of a two-year contract totaling $8.6 million, and ensures accessible depths for large vessels, the continued flow of commodities across the Great Lakes, and the economic viability of United States waterways.
