  • Dredging to Begin at Sandusky Harbor: Notice to All Boaters

    Dredging of the federal navigation channel in Sandusky Harbor by the U.S. Army Corps of Engineers, Buffalo District and its contractor, Michigan-based The King Co., Inc., will begin Sunday, Sept. 17. Recreational boaters who routinely use the channel should take caution and be aware of changes within the channel marked by buoys. Boaters are asked to go slow and stay away from marine equipment, stay clear of the contractor’s temporary pipeline, and stay out of the perimeter of the sediment placement area.
  • U.S. Army Corps of Engineers to begin construction on Vermilion Harbor West Pier

    VERMILION, Ohio — The U.S. Army Corps of Engineers, Buffalo District and its contractor, Norwalk, Ohio-based Mark Schaffer Excavating-Trucking, are scheduled to begin repairs to the Vermilion Harbor West Pier the week of Sept. 4. Construction will temporarily limit access to the Main Street beach while repairs are made, ensuring the harbor remains economically viable and able to provide access for recreation and refuge to boaters on the Great Lakes.
  • USACE, Buffalo District Hosted Public Information Session about the Proposed Plan to Clean up Contaminated Sediment in the Lower Maumee River

    More than 20 people attended the Lower Maumee River Great Lakes Legacy Act public information session on the proposed sediment clean-up plan. The information session allowed for dialog to learn more about contaminated sediments located in the Lower Maumee River of the Maumee Area of Concern (AOC). Attendees asked questions and provided feedback about the project before a remedial design phase begins. The proposed feasibility study is posted online at: https://www.epa.gov/great-lakes-aocs/information-session-proposed-contaminated-sediment-clean-lower-maumee-river.   • U.S. Army Corps of Engineers Completes Stabilization of Grand River West Bank in Painesville

    The U.S. Army Corps of Engineers, Buffalo District and its contractor, Warrensville Heights-based Nerone and Sons, Inc., have completed repairs to stabilize the west bank of the Grand River. Repairs to the bank provide long-lasting protection from erosion which threatened public utilities, residents’ access to their historic homes along Bank Street, and the environmental health of the river below.
  • USACE Buffalo District Awards Contract for Balance of Plant & Groundwater Operable Units at Niagara Falls Storage Site

    The U.S. Army Corps of Engineers, Buffalo District is pleased to announce that it has awarded a $40 million contract to Enviro-Fix Solutions LLC for Niagara Falls Storage Site (NFSS) Remedial and Site Services. The first task order was awarded on Aug. 4, 2023 for $11,984,341.90, which includes remediating contaminated media in accordance with the Record of Decision for the Balance of Plan (BOP) and Groundwater Operable Units (OU). This work is being carried out under the Formerly Utilized Sites Remedial Action Program (FUSRAP).
  • U.S. Army Corps of Engineers Takes Next Step to Create New Wetland Ecosystem in Buffalo’s Outer Harbor

    The U.S. Army Corps of Engineers (USACE), Buffalo District awarded a $5.3 million contract to Michigan-based Ryba Marine Construction Co. on July 27 to construct a stone breakwater in the abandoned Shipping Slip 3 in Buffalo’s Outer Harbor. Construction of the breakwater marks the first major physical step in creating another new wetland ecosystem on Buffalo’s waterfront using material dredged from the Buffalo River.
  • U.S. Army Corps of Engineers Buffalo District Headquarters Moves to Downtown Buffalo

    The headquarters of the U.S. Army Corps of Engineers, Buffalo District has re-located to the historic Hens & Kelly Building at 478 Main Street in the heart of the City Buffalo. Moving to the new headquarters at the corner of Main and Mohawk Streets – now known as the Mohawk Building – marks the district’s return to the city’s central business district after 75 years.

    The project delivery team for the U.S. Army Corps of Engineers (USACE) Dredging Operations and Environmental Research, or DOER, Project 19-11 recently published technical guidance and tools for modernizing the conduct of dredging evaluations for open water disposal compliance.

    The U.S. Army Corps of Engineers (USACE), Buffalo District has marked a submerged stone wall in Ashtabula, Ohio to remind boaters of its presence inside Ashtabula Harbor’s East Breakwater.
