  • Corps urges all to monitor Missouri River conditions - threat to levees significant

    The Kansas City District wants all stakeholders - public, levee districts, local and state authorities - to pay close attention to conditions on the Missouri River. Water levels are high now in many locations and are forecasted to get higher. High concern of overtopping to non-federal levees in the northern reaches of our district – from Rulo, Neb. to Kansas City, Mo. over the next several days is significant due to heavy runoff from rain and melting ice. We will be closely monitoring federal levees, but none are predicted to overtop at this time. It takes three to four days for water from Yankton, S.D. to reach our portion of the Missouri River.

  • Corps awards contract for levee repairs along Feather River West Levee

    Repairs will soon be underway for nearly five miles of critically deficient Feather River west levee between Tudor Road and Cypress Avenue in south Sutter County. In late February, the US Army Corps of Engineers (USACE) issued a $35 million contract to Great Lakes E&I for its Sutter Basin Project, which involves the installation of cutoff walls as deep as 140 feet into the existing levee.

    Officials say though probability is low, if the District of Columbia Levee System is overtopped with flood water and breaks, it could result in loss of life, billions of dollars in damages and major disruption to the national government.   • Army Corps to host public meeting on levee systems, flood risk management

    The U.S. Army Corps of Engineers is hosting a public meeting July 18 from 6:30 – 8:30 p.m. at the Smart Energy Building at Binghamton University (85 Murray Hill Road in Vestal) to present on and discuss levee systems in Broome, Chenango and Tioga counties along with other flood risk management-related topics like flood mapping, insurance and preparedness.

    WALLA WALLA, Wash. – A herd of goats will arrive during the weekend to remove weeds and other vegetation growing on levees that border the creek shoreline extending from the Mill Creek diversion dam downstream to the metal division works foot bridge near the Mill Creek Office. Contractors who manage the goat-grazing service will arrive on Friday, June 15, to set up fencing.
