  • Commentary: Macho men make mortal mistakes

    Every year, USACE publishes updated statistics for water safety (or lack thereof) at its project locations throughout the country. In the eight years I’ve been working for USACE, the statistics on drownings have not significantly changed (that I can recall), regardless of the amount of focus and messaging the enterprise has published. Again, it’s no surprise that USACE data from 2023 shows that drowning victims at our locations are 88 percent male and 89 percent who weren’t wearing life jackets.

  • Dworshak Dam discharge increasing to safely control the rate of reservoir fill

    AHSAHKA, Idaho – Dworshak Dam is currently releasing 1,600 cubic feet per second (cfs). Flows will begin increasing on the evening of Tuesday, May 21st to be in the approximate range of 3,000-5,000 cfs.

  • Road Across Lake Shelbyville Dam Closed Due to Maintenance

    The road across the main dam at Lake Shelbyville will be closed starting 7:00AM Monday, May 20th thru 12:00PM on Friday, May 24th and again Tuesday, May 28th thru Friday, May 31st. The road should open each day at 5:00PM.

  • Lake Shelbyville Kids Fishing Tournament

    The U.S. Army Corps of Engineers at Lake Shelbyville and Friends of Lake Shelbyville is hosting a free fishing tournament for children 12 and under on Saturday, June 1, 2024 at Opossum Pond. The pond is located near the entrance to the Opossum Creek Recreation Area. Participants must pre-register by calling (217) 774-3951 ext. 2, or email lakeshelbyville@usace.army.mil. Information needed: name of participant, age of participant on event day, name of parent/guardian, and phone number for parent/guardian.

  • Cordell Hull Dam Right Bank Tailwater Recreation Area reopens

    NASHVILLE, Tenn. (May 9, 2024) – The U.S. Army Corps of Engineers Nashville District announces the area below Cordell Hull Dam known as the Right Bank Tailwater Recreation Area has reopened to the public following construction work recently completed to stabilize the rock bluff below the dam.

  • Corps of Engineers announces new traffic plan for Cook Recreation Area

    NASHVILLE, Tenn. (May 7, 2024) – The U.S. Army Corps of Engineers Nashville District announces operational changes to Cook Recreation Area at J. Percy Priest Lake. Park staff will use electric gates, traffic cones and newly constructed roundabout and entrance station to manage traffic flow and parking.

  • Missouri River Basin runoff forecast improves but remains below average; Fort Peck Flow Test underway

    As warmer weather moves into the Missouri River Basin, spring precipitation brought some much-needed moisture throughout the basin. For the month of April, runoff was 2.1 million acre-feet, 71% of average, for the basin above Sioux City, Iowa. The annual runoff forecast for the upper Missouri River Basin above Sioux City is 19.2 MAF, 75% of average, and 1.7 MAF higher than last month’s forecast.
