  • Army Corps shares plan for 2026 recreational water releases from Francis E. Walter Dam

    The U.S. Army Corps Engineers’ Philadelphia District shared the 2026 Recreation Plan for the Francis E. Walter Dam. The plan specifies dates and actions associated with whitewater and fishing releases from the dam from late March to early October of 2026. USACE coordinates the plan with the Pennsylvania Fish & Boat Commission and the Pennsylvania Department of Conservation and Natural Resources.

    The U.S. Army Corps of Engineers and Wolf Creek State Park will hold the 35th Annual Lake Shelbyville Deer Hunt for People with Disabilities during the first firearm deer season on November 21-23, 2025. The hunt will be conducted in portions of recreation areas at Lake Shelbyville that are closed for the season.
  • Gavins Point Dam releases to be reduced to winter release rate

    Releases from Gavins Point Dam will be reduced in late November as flow support to navigation ends. Releases are currently 25,500 cubic feet per second (cfs). “We will continue to make releases from Gavins Point Dam to provide flow support at a level 4,500 cfs less than full service, through the end of the navigation flow support season, which ends on Dec. 1 at the mouth of the Missouri River,” said John Remus, chief of the USACE, Missouri River Water Management Division.

A virtual meeting on Missouri River Mainstem Reservoir system operations is scheduled for Thursday, Oct. 30 to present the draft 2025-2026 Annual Operating Plan.
  • September runoff above average; Fall public meetings set

    Although overall runoff for September 2025 in the upper Missouri River Basin was above average, runoff in the Fort Peck and Garrison reaches continues to be well-below average. “Beneficial rainfall occurred over central South Dakota and North Dakota in September resulting in well-above average runoff into Oahe, Big Bend, Fort Randall, and Gavins Point,” said John Remus, chief of the U.S. Army Corps of Engineers’ Missouri River Basin Water Management Division.
  • Army Corps shares details for F.E. Walter Dam water releases

    The U.S. Army Corps Engineers’ Philadelphia District shared details for the season’s final recreational water releases from the Francis E. Walter Dam. The recreation plan allows for a large volume of remaining water storage to be released during the second weekend of October to draw down the reservoir to its winter elevation. Due to the dry season, minimal forecasted rainfall and limited surplus of water storage remaining, a ‘mega release’ will not be possible this year.
