• USACE, City and County of Honolulu invite public comment on Ala Wai Canal Flood Risk Management Study

    The U.S. Army Corps of Engineers (USACE) and the City and County of Honolulu (CCH) invite public comment on the preparation of the Ala Wai Canal Flood Risk Management General Re-evaluation Study (Ala Wai FRM GR), Supplemental Environmental Impact Statement (SEIS) now through May 8, 2023. The Ala Wai FRM GR study is looking at ways to reduce physical and economic damages due to riverine flooding and to enhance life safety and community resilience throughout the entire Ala Wai watershed. Community involvement is crucial to ensuring the success of the Ala Wai FRM GR Study as it enters its next critical phase. To maximize community involvement, USACE in partnership with the CCH, will hold a virtual public meeting, Monday, April 24, at 5:30 p.m. to present the prospective plan, answer questions, and accept oral comments. The virtual meeting format will include an overview of the project, the NEPA/HEPA processes, and present the results of the plan formulation process to-date, including development, evaluation, and comparison of the final array of alternatives.     Instructors Shawn Crow and Ethan Backus from Braxton County High School were able to bring their engineering class to Winfield Locks & Dam on March 30th to spend time looking at various applications of structural, mechanical, and electrical engineering techniques at the project.
  • 23-027 Dworshak Dam releases to begin increasing Thursday evening

    AHSAHKA, Idaho – Dworshak Dam is currently releasing 5,100 cubic feet per second. Flows will begin increasing on the evening of Thursday April 13 to be in the approximate range of 7,000 cfs. On the evening of Sunday April 16, flows will increase for a two-day period to be in the approximate range of 9,000 to 10,000 cfs.

    The U.S. Army Corps of Engineers' Philadelphia District shared an update on repair work on the Chesapeake City Bridge in Cecil County, Maryland. Work includes repairs of the bridge expansion joints and will require periodic single-lane closures.

  • $2.03 million contract awarded for repairs on Tuttle Creek service gate liners with BIL funding

    Two service gate liners will be replaced at Tuttle Creek Dam, near Manhattan, Kansas, later this year after damage was discovered during a routine dam inspection in Oct. 2020. The U.S. Army Corps of Engineers, Kansas City District received funding through the Bipartisan Infrastructure Law, or BIL, and has awarded a $2.03 million contract for the Tuttle Creek Dam service gate repairs to Alltech.
  • Boater Safety Course Offered at Rend Lake Visitor Center

    The U.S. Coast Guard Auxiliary Alton Pool Flotilla 34 is hosting a Boat America Boater Safety Course at the Rend Lake Visitor Center on April 22, 2023, from 9:00am to 5:00pm. The successful completion of the course results in a boater safety certificate. In Illinois, those born after January 1, 1998, are required to complete the course to operate a boat. In Missouri, the date is January 1, 1984. Many insurance companies offer discounts on boat insurance to boaters who successfully complete the Boat America course. The $25.00 course fee includes the Boat America textbook with study guide, course exam, Boating Safely certificate, and a Boating Safely wallet card. There is a $5 additional fee for each additional person after a textbook has been purchased, which covers the exam, certificate, and wallet card.
  • Nesting season begins at DMCAs

    SAVANNAH, Ga. — Mary Richards and Robin Armetta, two biologists from the U.S. Army Corps of Engineers, Savannah District, survey bird species in the dredged material containment areas along the Savannah River, every two weeks. The DMCAs are designated placement sites for sediment removed from the Savannah River that provide habitats for several bird species.

    VICKSBURG, Miss. – The U.S. Army Corps of Engineers (USACE) Vicksburg District held a career fair at the Warren Central Junior High School basketball gymnasium on Thursday for over 400 eighth graders from four local junior high schools.
  • USACE lifts small craft advisory for Arkansas River

    LITTLE ROCK, Ark. – The U.S. Army Corps of Engineers is lifting the small craft advisory for the Arkansas River. Small craft advisories are issued when flows reach 70,000 cubic feet per second. While flows have receded, USACE officials urge boaters to always exercise caution when on the river.
