The U.S. Army Corps of Engineers provides oversight, safeguarding, maintenance and ultimately decommissioning for three U.S. Army deactivated nuclear power plants:            


 

Project Status

The U.S. Army Corps of Engineers manages the three deactivated nuclear power plants‎ in accordance with permits issued under the Army Reactor Program.

Current status of the three deactivated nuclear power plants are:

  • MH-1A STURGIS barge in Galveston, Texas: Radiological decommissioning is complete. The barge has been transported to Brownsville, Texas and dismantlement is underway. View photos here.
  • SM-1 deactivated nuclear power plant at Fort Belvoir, Virginia: Currently maintained in safe storage, decommissioning planning currently underway, implementation of decommissioning activities anticipated to begin 2020.
  • SM-1A deactivated nuclear power plant at Fort Greely, Alaska: Currently maintained in safe storage, decommissioning planning contract was awarded in December 2017, implementation of decommissioning activities anticipated to begin 2022.
