  • Iron Walls 2025: USACE, security and law enforcement conduct antiterrorism exercise

    The U.S. Army Corps of Engineers Sacramento District Security and Law Enforcement Office recently partnered with the Calaveras County Sheriff’s Department, Army CID, Army Counterintelligence and USACE South Pacific Division Security and Law Enforcement for Iron Walls 2025 – a three-day, full-scale antiterrorism exercise. From bomb threat response to force protection coordination, this training brought together federal and local law enforcement partners to strengthen readiness and cooperation. Exercises like this are essential to ensuring safety, security, and seamless teamwork when it matters most.

    Even during the grueling 68-day assignment – working 12 to 14 hours a day, Brig. Gen. Bill Hannan found resilience and inspiration – from the survivors. Though this was a horrible disaster, I saw the best in people, both in helping their neighbors and working together, said Hannan, Northwestern Division (NWD) commanding general. In June, he returned from leading the U.S. Army Corps of Engineers’ Task Force Phoenix (like the mythological bird), which is the team responsible for wildfire debris removal and recovery efforts in Southern California.

  • LDP grads on program: Making connections, overcoming obstacles, coming out stronger

    The U.S. Army Corps of Engineers Memphis District invests in employees and develops their leadership skills by utilizing the Leadership Development Program (LDP). LDP graduates are said to benefit from an expanded network of mentors, elevated promotion potential, and a greater understanding of the enterprise and district (to name a few). Having more mentors and a better chance at promotion is nice, but according to the class of 2022, these perks are barely a fraction of what participants can get out of this yearlong program.

    Gilbert and Kohara were brought together by the Co-Op program, a bilateral exchange opportunity created by U.S. Army Japan and JGSDF, that pairs junior officers and non-commissioned officers (NCOs) with their foreign counterpart to enhance English and Japanese language comprehension skills, learn about each other’s cultures, familiarize themselves with their respective branches’ doctrines and techniques, all with the goal of strengthening the strategic alliance between America and Japan.

    After 10 months of construction on the site of the Louisville VA Medical Center, area residents are starting to see the beginnings of the facility rise out of the ground. Much of this year has been spent on various earthwork preparations, but great strides have been made in several foundation-laying portions of the project over the last several months.

    The U.S. Army Corps of Engineers has been engineering solutions for our nation’s toughest challenges for 246 years. Engineers create new possibilities all the time and the engineers at USACE are no different. During National Engineers Week, Feb. 21 to 25, engineers are recognized for their notable contributions to society.  To celebrate, the Louisville District is highlighting team members from different engineering disciplines. Each engineer focuses on a different facet of engineering. While some engineers focus on things like remediation and construction, others spend their time negotiating contracts and designs. Other civil engineers deal with the financial side of engineering and more.  As the nation’s engineering and public works agency, USACE deliver’s quality projects and programs, on time and within budget, safely for the American people, and these engineers help make USACE a strong organization.
