  • New Lock at the Soo Mega Project Raises the Bar for Success

    Members of the New Lock at the Soo Integrated Project Office (IPO) team along with engineers from the Inland Navigation Design Center (INDC) acknowledged a significant milestone within this Detroit District’s high visibility mega project; they’ve completed the review and approval of over 2,600 technical submittals. The average, run-of-the-mill construction project typically sees a couple hundred submittals. Maintaining momentum requires the contractor to provide technical assurances that the execution strategies they intend to employ will meet or exceed contractual requirements and specifications. These assurances, provided in the form of a written submittal (transmittal) offer detailed written and pictorial descriptions and renderings of how the contractor intends to perform various tasks. Articulating these strategies and gaining Corps of Engineers concurrence permits the contractor to proceed without incurring delays, achieve milestones, and invoice the government in a timely manner. This New Lock at the Soo celebrated milestone pales in comparison to the fact that the IPO, INDC, and their contractor may publish and review yet another 3,000 submittals before the first freighter makes its way through the new lock.

    VICKSBURG, Miss. – On August 13, 2024, the U.S. Army Corps of Engineers (USACE) Vicksburg District signed a Project Partnership Agreement (PPA) with the City of Gautier, Mississippi, under the Mississippi Environmental Infrastructure Program (Section 592).

  • Volunteer campers provide extra helping hands to lake staff

    The staff at Patoka Lake in Dubois, Indiana, recently welcomed two members of the “family” back, just in time for the busy summer months ahead at the lake. Tim and Margie Carter aren’t paid staff members, instead, they are volunteer campers who help with various tasks to help maintain the property in exchange for being able to park and connect their 38-foot camper there.

  • Mississippi River Commission prepares for spring high-water inspection trip

    VICKSBURG, Miss. – The Mississippi River Commission will conduct its annual spring high-water inspection trip on the Mississippi River, March 27- 31, 2023. The Commission will host four public meetings onboard the Motor Vessel MISSISSIPPI in towns along the river, with its members meeting with local partners, stakeholders and residents hearing their concerns, ideas and issues.

  • Silver Jackets working to communicate risks

    “We’re connecting the dots. I love being part of a team which brings people together and contributes little parts to make a whole project,” said Brian Rast, Kansas City District Lead Silver Jackets Coordinator for Kansas and Missouri. Through the U.S. Army Corps of Engineers Institute for Water Resources, program funding is provided to Corps of Engineers districts enabling them to partner with agencies in reducing risks from natural hazards. This program is called Silver Jackets.

  • Corps protects town’s sanitary system

    The U.S. Army Corps of Engineers Pittsburgh District is partnering with the Town of Worthington to reclaim an eroded bank along a 1,400-foot stretch of the West Fork River. The more than $880,000 project is designed to protect a sanitary sewer line that runs along the riverbank. The project is being funding in a 35-65 percent split between the City of Worthington and the district.

The U.S. Army Corps of Engineers, Middle East District, has a solution to ease this difficulty. During the recent Maritime Traffic Coordination Center post-award conference, which took place March 15-17 in Kuwait, the team dedicated one morning to a formal partnering session.
