    U.S. Army Corps of Engineers (USACE) team members are using new tools to complete mission essential tasks like mapping, surveying, and construction and infrastructure inspections. The Galveston District’s (SWG) Advanced Data Section is now utilizing Unmanned Aircraft Systems (UAS) and Unmanned Survey Vessels (USV) to deliver innovative solutions in data collection and analysis for projects, according to Heng-Wei (David) Tsai, P.E., Advanced Data Section chief.

  • Network Development and Autonomous Vehicles: A Smart Transportation Testbed at Fort Carson

    Abstract: In this work, a smart transportation testbed was utilized at Fort Carson to demonstrate three use cases for the primary purpose to plan, develop, demonstrate, and employ autonomous vehicle technologies at military installations and within the surrounding communities to evaluate commercially available Connected and Automated Vehicles and the potential to reduce base operating costs, improve safety and quality of life for military service members and their families, and deliver services more efficiently and effectively. To meet this purpose, an automated vehicle shuttle, an unmanned aerial system, and a wireless network were used and tested during the project. Results for the automated shuttle indicated that de-spite the quantity of data generated by operations, the contractors may not be ready to share information in a readily usable format. Additionally, successful use by the public is predicated on both knowing their mobility patterns and staff members promoting trust in the technology to prospective riders. Results for the unmanned aerial system showed successful identification of foreign object debris and runway cracks at the airfield. The wireless network is now operational and is used for additional work which utilizes the installed traffic cameras.
  • Surveying the Future

    Survey technicians, cartographic technicians and unmanned aerial vehicles (UAV) pilots are the boots on the ground for the New York District when it comes to collecting the critical information required by engineers, project planners, and real estate specialists. The Survey Section of the New York District resides within the Operations Support Branch of Operations Division. The teams workload comes from every office in the District when there’s a need for geospatial mapping support. On any given day survey teams are in the field collecting hydrographic and topographic maps to support the delivery of the district’s civil works, military and interagency and international support missions.
  • USACE Drones provide an eye in the sky for engineers

    In March of 2020, Geographic Information System Specialist Rachel Byrd and Project Engineer Ryan Fagan with the U.S. Army Corps of Engineers Louisville District’s Engineering Division piloted the inaugural Small Unmanned Aircraft System flight for the district in an open field at the Parklands of Floyds Fork in Louisville, Ky.
  • CRREL tests new ways to measure smoke density

    CRREL partners with the U.S. Coast Guard's Research and Development Center and the Environmental Protection Agency to test an aerial drone to determine how effective the device is for measuring air quality and environmental impact of burning oil on water. The aerial drone is a new means of capturing these measurements, and CRREL is one of the few federal agencies with the knowledge, permissions, licenses, and facilities to accommodate in situ burns.
