Mile Point construction moves forward; boaters should use caution

The U.S. Army Corps of Engineers’ Jacksonville District asks the public to use caution in the waterways at Mile Point on the St. Johns River. Heavy construction is ongoing in the Chicopit Bay and Helen Cooper Floyd Park area near Mayport Naval Station.

Corps leader updates California maritime industry

Despite a nearly $2 billion budget to maintain the nation's inland waterways and harbors, it simply isn't enough for the U.S. Army Corps of Engineers to meet all the maritime industry’s infrastructure needs, Maj. Gen. Ed Jackson told attendees at the winter meeting of the California Marine Affairs and Navigation Conference held in Marina del Rey, California, Jan. 21.

Corps of Engineers announces Miami Harbor project successes

Jacksonville, Fla. – The U.S Army Corps of Engineers announces the official construction completion on the Miami Harbor Deepening and Widening Project, the first major port deepening to a 50-feet depth in the southeastern United States. Along with deepening, which was finished in September, mitigation construction is also completed. Recent monitoring shows the mitigation features are functioning successfully. “We are pleased at the success of the mitigation features,” said the Corps’ Jacksonville District Commander, Col. Jason A. Kirk. “The features include nearly 17 acres of seagrass and 12 acres of artificial reef.”

Eight Jacksonville District projects receive congressional authorization

Eight U.S. Army Corps of Engineers Jacksonville District projects that will provide critical infrastructure to local ports and ecosystem restoration efforts in Florida received approval as part of the Water Resources Reform and Development Act (WRRDA) of 2014, which was signed into law June 10.

USACE Galveston District’s projects receive WRRDA authorization

GALVESTON, Texas (May 16, 2014) – The U.S. Army Corps of Engineers Galveston District received authorization for construction for the deepening of the Freeport Ship Channel to 55 feet, deepening of the Sabine Neches Waterway to 48 feet and will reauthorize the Corpus Christi Ship Channel for widening and deepening to 52 feet following the U.S. Senate-House joint conference committee’s agreement on the Water Resources Reform and Development Act (WRRDA) yesterday.

Ports are focus of national spotlight in 2012

Ports were thrust into the national spotlight in 2012 after President Obama announced the “We Can’t Wait” Initiative, which placed several of Jacksonville District’s port projects and studies onto the fast track for implementation. As a part of the initiative, President Obama identified seven nationally and regionally significant infrastructure projects to be expedited to help modernize and expand five major ports in the United States, including the port of Jacksonville and the port of Miami.
