  • Army Corps to switch traffic pattern on SR-1 Bridge

    The U.S. Army Corps of Engineers’ Philadelphia District and its contractor are continuing work to replace the concrete deck overlay on the Senator William V. Roth, Jr. Bridge (SR-1) in Delaware. Lane restrictions will be in place periodically over several months. Traffic patterns will be altered on June 10-15.

    The U.S. Army Corps of Engineers’ Philadelphia District and its contractor are continuing work to replace the concrete deck overlay on the Senator William V. Roth, Jr. Bridge (SR-1) in Delaware. Lane restrictions will be in place periodically over several months. Traffic patterns will be altered on June 2-3 (delayed from late May). In addition, the contractor will be closing the ramp from US Route 13 to northbound SR-1 from June 1 to June 14 nightly between 6 p.m. and 6 a.m.

Roth, Jr. Bridge (SR-1) in Delaware beginning March 14th and ending in December 2022. The repair work will require lane restrictions and changing traffic patterns, as well as single and double lane closures.

    Mr. Jaime Pinkham, Acting Assistant Secretary of the Army for Civil Works, and Maj. Gen. Butch Graham, USACE Deputy Commanding General for Civil and Emergency Operations, visited Philadelphia District projects and met with partners in Delaware and Maryland on June 15-16, 2021.
  • Army Corps to conduct repairs on St. Georges Bridge

    The U.S. Army Corps of Engineers’ Philadelphia District and its contractor Freyssinet, Inc. will be completing joint seal repairs on the St. Georges Bridge in Delaware. Work will begin Monday June 14 and last for about two weeks. Both lanes of the bridge will remain open during the project; however, a lane shift through the bike lane may be enacted.
  • Simulations of Shoreline Changes along the Delaware Coast

    Abstract: This technical report presents two applications of the GenCade model to simulate long-term shoreline evolution along the Delaware Coast driven by waves, inlet sediment transport, and longshore sediment transport. The simulations also include coastal protection practices such as periodic beach fills, post-storm nourishment, and sand bypassing. Two site-specific GenCade models were developed: one is for the coasts adjacent to the Indian River Inlet (IRI) and another is for Fenwick Island. In the first model, the sediment exchanges among the shoals and bars of the inlet were simulated by the Inlet Reservoir Model (IRM) in the GenCade. An inlet sediment transfer factor (γ) was derived from the IRM to quantify the capability of inlet sediment bypassing, measured by a rate of longshore sediments transferred across an inlet from the updrift side to the downdrift side. The second model for the Fenwick Island coast was validated by simulating an 11-year-long shoreline evolution driven by longshore sediment transport and periodic beach fills. Validation of the two models was achieved through evaluating statistical errors of simulations. The effects of the sand bypassing operation across the IRI and the beach fills in Fenwick Island were examined by comparing simulation results with and without those protection practices. Results of the study will benefit planning and management of coastal sediments at the sites.
  • USACE Philadelphia District supporting response to COVID-19 public health emergency

    The U.S. Army Corps of Engineers’ Philadelphia District is providing initial planning and engineering support for the States of New Jersey and Delaware to address possible medical facility shortages due to the COVID-19 Pandemic. The mission, in support of the Federal Emergency Management Agency (FEMA) and the two states, is part of a nationwide federal, state and local effort to respond to the public health emergency.
  • Army Corps announces signing of Chief’s Report for Delaware Bay study

    PHILADELPHIA (Mar. 9, 2020) – The U.S. Army Corps of Engineers’ Philadelphia District announces that Lt. Gen. Todd T. Semonite, USACE Commanding General and the 54th U.S. Army Chief of Engineers, has signed the Chief’s Report for the “Delaware Beneficial Use of Dredged Material for the Delaware River Feasibility Study” — a key milestone for the proposed project. The signing of the report advances the project to Congress for authorization.
  • Army Corps and DNREC’s Division of Parks & Recreation restrict access to section of Indian River Inlet bulkhead

    The U.S. Army Corps of Engineers and the Delaware Department of Natural Resources and Environmental Control’s Division of Parks & Recreation have restricted access to a 120-foot section of bulkhead at the Indian River Inlet within the Delaware Seashore State Park. The sidewalk and adjacent capstones in the inlet have experienced significant erosion, creating the need to close off access to the section for safety reasons.
