USGS, ERDC install underwater Asian carp deterrent system successfully

The U.S. Geological Survey (USGS), the U.S. Army Engineer Research and Development Center (ERDC) and partners installed a temporary, experimental underwater Acoustic Deterrent System, or uADS, at Mississippi River Lock 19 between Keokuk, Iowa, and Hamilton, Illinois, Feb. 3. The deployment is part of a study to understand how invasive Asian carp respond to acoustic, or sound, signals.

Sections of bio acoustic fish fence submerged at Barkley Lock

GRAND RIVERS, Ky. (Oct. 9, 2019) – Crews are submerging and installing sections of a bio acoustic fish fence on the downstream side of Barkley Lock this week as part of an experiment to deter the passage of Asian carp with a wall of bubbles, sound and light.

Bio-acoustic fish fence expected to be operational this fall

GRAND RIVERS, Ky. (July 30, 2019) – An experimental project designed to deter Asian carp from entering Lake Barkley is underway. Officials addressed stakeholders and media today on the deployment of the bio-acoustic fish fence on the downstream side of the navigation lock and evaluation of the system’s ability to deter the movement of these fish.

Corps releases final report on deterring movement of Asian carp into the Great Lakes

ROCK ISLAND, Illinois. - The U.S. Army Corps of Engineers has released The Great Lakes Mississippi River Interbasin Study – Brandon Road Final Integrated Feasibility Study and Environmental Impact Statement (GLMRIS-Brandon Road Report and EIS). A review period will run November 23 through December 24.

Corps releases draft report related to preventing spread of Asian carp into the Great Lakes

2014 Asian Carp Control Strategy Framework Released

The Asian Carp Regional Coordinating Committee (ACRCC) announced a coordinated strategy to protect the Great Lakes from silver and bighead carp, building on previous efforts to prevent self-sustaining populations from becoming established in the Great Lakes. The 2014 Asian Carp Control Strategy Framework introduces several new initiatives, including testing and deploying new physical and chemical control tools, constructing a new electric barrier in the Chicago Area Waterway System, and building a project to physically separate the Great Lakes and Mississippi River basins at Eagle Marsh near Fort Wayne, Ind.

Corps to host public meeting on study to prevent Asian carp transfer between Mississippi River and Great Lakes basins

ST. PAUL, Minn. – The U.S. Army Corps of Engineers and the White House Council on Environmental Quality are hosting a public meeting in Bloomington Jan. 27, 2014, from 4 - 7 p.m. to discuss the Great Lakes and Mississippi River Interbasin Study, or GLMRIS, report that was submitted to Congress Jan. 6, 2014, and to allow for public comment. The report presents a range of options and technologies available to prevent the spread of aquatic nuisance species, such as Asian carp, between the Great Lakes and Mississippi River basins through aquatic connections.
