    ERDC's Cold Regions Research and Engineering Laboratory (CRREL) has performed decades of research and fieldwork establishing that 55 inches of ice is the thickness required to land an LC-130 (a ski-equipped version of the C-130) for both saltwater ice and freshwater ice. Researchers have long thought that a landing on freshwater ice could be done on much less thick of ice.

  • Helping hands: ERDC employees volunteer for LA wildfire recovery

    Each year, the U.S. Army Corps of Engineers (USACE) deploys hundreds of trained personnel and resources across the United States and its territories to aid in disaster relief efforts. In the aftermath of hurricanes, fires, floods or infrastructure crises, USACE emergency operations is responsible for coordinating and executing several missions in post-disaster environments. As part of this response, ERDC employees volunteer their time and expertise, making a tangible impact in communities affected by disaster.

    Four researchers in two laboratories at ERDC were recently awarded the 2024 Department of Defense (DoD) Science, Mathematics, and Research for Transformation (SMART) Scholar & Mentor of the Year Awards. The recipients are scholar Dr. Andrew Groeneveld and mentor Dr. Michael “Wes” Trim, both with the Geotechnical and Structures Laboratory (GSL), and scholar Dr. Andrew Jin and mentor Dr. Igor Linkov, both with the Environmental Laboratory (EL).

    A team from the U.S. Army Engineer Research and Development Center (ERDC) rolled out an innovation designed to solve a tough expeditionary logistics challenge—getting heavy military vehicles from ship to shore without getting stuck. Armed with expertise and a groundbreaking technology called Submersible Matting (SUBMAT), ERDC researchers played a critical role in supporting beach landing operations during Joint Logistics Over-the-Shore operation (JLOTS 25), part of this year’s Balikatan, an annual exercise with the U.S. and Philippine military.
