  • San Francisco District planning team applies nature-based solutions to Roi-Namur recovery efforts

    U.S. Army Corps of Engineers San Francisco District’s knowledge of and push for Engineering with Nature principles and designs reached a new high as the district’s EWN expertise jumped an ocean all the way to Roi-Namur, the second largest island of the Kwajalein Atoll in the western central Pacific Ocean. It’s part of the Republic of the Marshall Islands, and it lies 2,100 nautical miles southwest of Honolulu and about 4,200 nautical miles southwest of San Francisco. On Oct. 11, a San Francisco District project development team submitted its preliminary EWN and non-EWN design plans to protect facilities against large waves to the USACE Honolulu District to present to the U.S. Army Garrison – Kwajalein Atoll and U.S. Army Space and Missile Defense Command.

USACE is currently accepting public comments regarding the study. Comments, including any suggested alternatives, information and analyses for our consideration are requested by Oct. 21, 2020.

  • Army Corps of Engineers prepares for strong El Nino in Bay Area

    SAN FRANCISCO – From gauging water levels behind dams, insuring the durability of levees, to working with local communities, the U.S. Army Corps of Engineers in San Francisco has embarked on an extensive effort to prepare the Bay Area and its network of waterways, wetlands and reservoirs for the arrival of an El Nino weather pattern which forecasters warn could bring prolonged periods of heavy rain, mudslides and flooding to a region more accustomed to years of drought.

    The Sacramento District awarded a $24 million contract Sept. 17 to Ross Island Sand and Gravel Co. of Oregon for maintenance dredging along the Sacramento and Stockton deep water ship channels.

  • Going Green: District powers debris-removal vessel with biofuel

    SAN FRANCISCO -- Soybeans are helping power a debris-removal vessel operated by the U.S. Army Corps of Engineers San Francisco District. Mechanics at the district's baseyard in Sausalito, Calif., overhauled the M/V Raccoon in 2011, to allow its engine to run for the first time on a non-petroleum fuel made entirely from soybeans called B99. The results are already being well received on deck.
  • USACE reservist gets help from A's in making daughter's 16th birthday sweet

    Allie Pearce celebrated her 16th birthday on June 22 by throwing out the ceremonial first pitch before the Oakland Athletics game against the San Francisco Giants at Oakland Coliseum. Her birthday was made a little less sweet since her father, Army Specialist Scott Pearce, is in Afghanistan for a year-long deployment.
