    The U.S. Army Corps of Engineers, St. Paul District, is releasing a small amount of flow at Reservation Dam to help maintain Lake Traverse water levels. Additionally, during the winter months White Rock Dam is slightly open to drain Mud Lake, located near Wheaton, Minnesota.

    A researcher with the U. S. Army Engineer Research and Development Center’s (ERDC) Environmental Laboratory (EL) is receiving recognition for his role in protecting the environment. Taylor Rycroft, a research environmental engineer, was named the 2024 USACE Researcher of the Year for his work with the Wellbot and Cyanobacterial Suppression Through Ultraviolet-C Neutralization (CyanoSTUN) technologies.

  • Army Civil Works announces invitations to apply for dam safety loans; $2 billion in potential federal financing for California

    WASHINGTON (Sept. 13, 2024) – The Office of the Assistant Secretary of the Army for Civil Works and the U.S. Army Corps of Engineers today announced the first set of proposals being invited to apply for loans under the new Corps Water Infrastructure Financing Program (CWIFP). Eight of the invited applicants are in California and the financing associated with these applications could result in dam safety work on 37 dams throughout the state.

  • Army Corps shares traffic advisory for Francis E. Walter Dam roads

    The U.S. Army Corps Engineers’ Philadelphia District shared a traffic advisory regarding roads at the Francis E. Walter Dam in White Haven, PA. With several ongoing road and bridge projects in the area, Army Corps staff have observed increased traffic along the Francis E. Walter Dam park access road. It’s important to note that the park access road is not designed as a through road. Federal law prohibits vehicles with a gross vehicle weight above 32,000 pounds (16 tons) from traveling across the dam. Vehicles with a gross vehicle weight above 32,000 pounds should find an alternate route.

  • Lock and Dam 25, Upper Mississippi River Navigation Study: Ship-Simulation Results

    Abstract: The US Army Engineer Research and Development Center, Coastal and Hydraulics Laboratory (CHL), used the Ship/Tow Simulator to evaluate navigational conditions for the US Army Corps of Engineers, St. Louis District (MVS), proposed 1,200 feet (ft) lock chamber at Lock and Dam 25 in a tow simulation study. The study considers the impacts to navigation throughout construction sequences of the proposed 1,200 ft lock chamber and the final completed project. Testing occurred at CHL in October–November 2022 with five industry tow pilots. A total of 47 unique test conditions for a total of 187 ship-simulation exercises were evaluated. All final project simulations indicated that the design is feasible. When testing the construction scenarios of the design, it was evident that a tug assist boat would be necessary for entering the 600 ft lock for both approaches. Results found that the intermediate wall construction should begin at the existing structure and progress downstream. Entering the 600 ft lock from the pool side was additionally completed successfully; however, modifications are needed for entering from the tailwater side. Ultimately, the results of this study will aid MVS in the design plan and decision-making regarding the proposed lock.
