  • Autonomous Vehicle Pilot at Joint Base Myer-Henderson Hall: Project Report Summary and Recommendations

    Abstract: Military installations serve as strategic staging areas that are integral to national security. The Army is currently reconsidering how it views its installations as part of the battle space under multi-domain operations, which includes technology modernization efforts, such as the rapidly expanding field of connected and autonomous vehicle (CAV) technology. The DoD community and military installations have an interest in investigating autonomous transportation systems to determine their potential role in a broad range of military applications. CAVs capture, store, and analyze tremendous amounts of data. Military installations need to understand the data systems and processes involved in CAV deployments. To that end, the Army is conducting pilot projects that deploy updated and commercially-available CAVs on installations and within adjacent com-munities to further demonstrate their use and conduct research and development to optimize and inform the integration of this emerging technology. This report documents the deployment of Autonomous Vehicle (AV) technologies at Joint Base Myer-Henderson Hall for a 90-day pilot study to evaluate a commercially-available AV.

  • Vegetation control to begin on Missouri River sandbars between Yankton and Vermillion, South Dakota

    The U.S. Army Corps of Engineers will conduct vegetation management activities on sandbars in the Missouri River between Yankton and Vermillion, South Dakota, the upper portion of Lewis and Clark Lake near Springfield, South Dakota and Niobrara, Nebraska, and as far upstream as Pickstown, South Dakota in September.

    Originally scheduled for May 4-8, the event is rescheduled for Sept. 14 -18. USACE is expanding on OSHA’s efforts to include fall prevention in the workplace to encompass all elements of the USACE mission.

  • Camp Branch swim beach closed at Smithville Lake for precautionary measure

    KANSAS CITY, Mo. –The U.S. Army Corps of Engineers, Kansas City District identified a potential toxic blue green algae bloom at Smithville Lake near Camp Branch swim beach. As a precautionary measure, Camp Branch swim beach, managed by Clay County Parks, Recreation and Historic Sites, is closed until additional test results are obtained.

  • Bank Grading Unit paves way for commerce, safety

    Memphis District Commander Col. Zachary Miller recently visited Island 68, a project site in Arkansas, where he met with the district’s hardworking Bank Grading Unit and reviewed progress made at the site thus far. According to Project Manager and River/Civil Engineer Cole Stonebrook, we have done work here before as this area is particularly erosive and scours easily in moving water. “The soils in the area are very unstable and highly erosive,” he said. “We are addressing a large bank failure by grading irregularities in the bank alignment to a smooth straight alignment. The Grading Unit is grading the banks to a one on four slope,  which requires moving 220,000 cubic yards of material.”

  • Vicksburg District reminds recreation site visitors to take precautions for a safe Fourth of July weekend

    VICKSBURG, Miss. – The U.S. Army Corps of Engineers (USACE) Vicksburg District reminds recreation site visitors across Mississippi, Arkansas and Louisiana to practice safety throughout the Fourth of July weekend. Recreation sites across the region will host special events during the holiday weekend. In Arkansas, fireworks shows will be held at Lake Ouachita July 3 and 4 and Lake Greeson July 3. In Mississippi, a fireworks show will be held at Sardis Lake July 4.

    KANSAS CITY, Mo. –The U.S. Army Corps of Engineers, Kansas City District is actively responding to a potentially toxic blue-green algae blooms at several lakes with site-specific sampling and posting public health advisory signs at lakes as recommended by state health agencies.

  • Coralville Lake Closes West Overlook Day Use Boat Ramp

    The U.S. Army Corps of Engineers, Rock Island District, has closed the West Overlook Day Use Boat Ramp at Coralville Lake until further notice. The closure was deemed necessary to evaluate safety concerns related to the boat ramp.
