  • USACE to host open house to share info on Draft Beltzville Lake Master Plan

    The U.S. Army Corps of Engineers will host an open house on January 7, 2026, to share details on a draft revision of the Beltzville Lake Master Plan. The open house will be held from 4-6 p.m. at the Towamensing Township Volunteer Fire Company. The public open house will cover the proposed changes to the current Beltzville Lake Master Plan. Team members will share instructions on how to submit comments and provide an opportunity for the public to ask questions and provide feedback. A 30-day public comment period will begin on January 7, 2026 and end on February 6, 2026.
  • Rebuilding Resilience: U.S. Army Corps of Engineers Restores Flood Protection Project in Pittsburgh’s West End

    When torrential rains hit Pittsburgh’s West End in 2018, the Saw Mill Run surged with more force than the neighborhood had seen in years. Within eight hours, more than four inches of rain funneled down the steep watershed into a narrow urban channel. The storm did not just test the system – it critically damaged portions of the Saw Mill Run local flood-protection project, a 4,717-foot channel built by the U.S. Army Corps of Engineers Pittsburgh District (USACE) in 2000 to defend thousands of residents and commuters just across the river from downtown Pittsburgh.
  • USACE to host Shallow Land Disposal Area public information session

    Pittsburgh and Buffalo districts’ staff will update the public on the project’s status, upcoming site activities, and other topics of public interest for the Shallow Land Disposal Area (SLDA) site. Additionally, remediation operations are expected to begin at the site later this year. The session will highlight details about upcoming site remediation activities and address topics of public interest including safety, environmental testing, and emergency response.
  • Corps of Engineers to conduct emergency exercise at Shallow Land Disposal Area

    USACE is conducting a full-scale emergency exercise at the Shallow Land Disposal Area (SLDA) site. During the exercise, the public will likely see increased security measures, emergency vehicles, and personnel, and probably hear emergency vehicle sirens. The increased activity is part of the drill and not an actual emergency.

    The U.S. Army Corps of Engineers Pittsburgh District is announcing that all essential services will continue during the lapse in Fiscal Year 2026 funding and all navigation facility operations will follow their existing schedules.
  • Army Corps awards contract for maintenance dredging for Philadelphia to Trenton portion of Delaware River

    The U.S. Army Corps of Engineers’ Philadelphia District awarded a contract to Cottrell Contracting Corp. of Chesapeake, Va. for $5.36 million to conduct maintenance dredging of portions of the Delaware River between the PA-NJ Turnpike Bridge and the north end of Newbold Island as well as the Fairless Turning Basin. Work is part of the Delaware River, Philadelphia to Trenton federal navigation project.

    The U.S. Army Corps of Engineers’ Philadelphia District awarded a contract to Norfolk Dredging Company for $27.6 million to conduct maintenance dredging of portions of the Delaware River and Wilmington Harbor federal shipping channels.
