  • Fifth graders help Army engineers

    In early December 2021, several 5th grade classes at Zundy Elementary in Wichita Falls, Texas helped beta test the Missouri Basin Balancer web-based video game for the U.S. Army Corps of Engineers, Northwestern Division. Throughout 2021, the Northwestern Division and Omaha District worked with USACE's Engineer Research and Development Center to get the game updated.

  • Dr. James Hearn presented Bronze de Fleury Medal; retires after more than 30 years of Federal service

    After 34 years of service to the Department of the Army including four years of Vietnam-Era active duty and 15 years in academe as a teacher and administrator, Dr. James Hearn retired on October 31.

    I have found a connection to and through the Missouri River that runs deep and as wide as it once meandered. I’ve been with the Omaha District a little more than four years. I knew when taking the job that North Dakota was in the District’s area of responsibility and I would likely find connections to my family. North Dakota is where my parents and grandparents grew up. My dad’s great grandfather moved to Garrison, North Dakota from Iowa in 1901 to farm and my great-grandfather worked on Missouri River riverboats until traffic ended in 1926.

  • Discovering a steamboat relic of Missouri River trade

    When you think of shipwrecks, it might be pirates, the ocean, sunken treasure and the stuff of movie–style wonder. But the Mighty Mo’ tells a tale with hundreds of shipwrecks of all sizes along its length. For the Corps, there are several responsibilities: regulatory permitting for construction in areas where a discovery may occur, the need to mitigate a construction project to address a discovery and the need to protect and respect the significance of a discovery among others.

  • Operation Santa brings gifts and music to special local groups

    On Dec. 13, volunteers from the Northwestern Division and Omaha District of the U.S. Army Corps of Engineers visited the Glenwood Resource Center in Glenwood, Iowa. The group came carrying presents for the patients and clients, sang carols and helped with a party for the participants. Volunteers, residents and the staff at Glenwood look forward to the annual get together.
