  • Vicksburg District sees near-record catfish caught at Arkabutla Lake

    VICKSBURG, Miss. – The U.S. Army Corps of Engineers (USACE) Vicksburg District visitors and staff received a surprise July 19 when a catfish grabbling guide service caught a near-record specimen at Arkabutla Lake. The guide service, Southern Boyz Grabbling, used the lake’s natural structure and a weighted wooden box to catch the 81.2-pound female flathead catfish by hand. At 54.5 inches long with a 36.5 inch girth, the catfish was just 8.3 pounds shy of the current state record. Fishermen Dalton Scott, Josh Bennett and Jacob Bennett were guiding a client through her first grabbling experience at the time. Scott discovered the catfish when he checked the box and quickly secured it with a stringer.

  • Vicksburg District’s Mat Sinking Unit begins revetment season

    VICKSBURG, Miss. – The U.S. Army Corps of Engineers (USACE) Vicksburg District held a “Blessing of the Fleet” ceremony July 21 to commemorate the Mat Sinking Unit’s deployment and the official start of revetment season. The ceremony was conducted virtually due to concerns related to COVID-19 and included blessings from USACE Chaplain Col. Bradford Baumann and Rev. Sam Godfrey of Christ Episcopal Church in Vicksburg, Mississippi. The ceremony also included remarks from USACE Vicksburg District Commander Col. Robert Hilliard.

  • Vicksburg District reopens Bryant Campground at Grenada Lake

    VICKSBURG, Miss. – The U.S. Army Corps of Engineers (USACE) Vicksburg District has reopened Bryant Campground at Grenada Lake in north Mississippi. The campground was closed earlier this year because of high water levels in its vicinity. Located on the north side of Grenada Lake and accessible from Mississippi Highway 7, Bryant Campground offers four campsites with electrical and water hookups for RVs. Reservations and payments for sites at Bryant Campground must be made in advance online at Recreation.gov.     Jacksonville, Fla. (Aug. 4, 2020) – The U.S. Army Corps of Engineers today announced the publication of the Draft Integrated Feasibility Report and Environmental Assessment for the Pinellas County, Florida, Coastal Storm Risk Management Study.

  • 110 miles of levee to be resurfaced in the St. Francis Basin

    Working with our local project Partner, the St. Francis Levee District of Arkansas, the St. Francis River Gravel Resurfacing Project Delivery Team (PDT) has advanced their project to the Contract Award milestone. They awarded an $8,353,877 contract to JLC Trucking to resurface 110 miles of levee in Cross, Poinsett, Craighead, and Mississippi Counties in Arkansas. This important contract maintenance work provides safe and reliable access for vehicles and monitoring levee conditions.

  • Jacksonville District awards contract to repair Ponce de Leon North Jetty

    JACKSONVILLE, Fla. (Aug. 4, 2020) – The U.S. Army Corps of Engineers Jacksonville District awarded a $7,015,443 contract July 28, 2020, to Kiewit Infrastructure South Co. of Omaha, Neb., for the Ponce De Leon Inlet North Jetty Rehabilitation and Aid to Navigation Replacement Project at Ponce de Leon Inlet in Volusia County, Fla.

  • Levee in Lee County, Arkansas to be resurfaced

    The Arkansas Levee Gravel Resurfacing Project Delivery Team (PDT) celebrated reaching their project’s Contract Award milestone on July 28. They awarded the $2,631,978 contract to Polk & Associates LLC which will resurface approximately 21 miles of the mainline Mississippi River Levee in Lee County, Arkansas. This maintenance of the levee’s crown provides safe and reliable access for vehicles and monitoring levee conditions.

    Walla Walla, WA -- The U.S. Army Corps of Engineers’ Walla Walla District (Corps) will be treating the invasive plant species, reed canary grass, in Yellowhawk Creek and Garrison Creek on August 6 and 7.

  • Great Lakes water levels reaching peaks for the year

    The U.S. Army Corps of Engineers, Detroit District, announces each of the Great Lakes, except Lake Superior, have likely reached their peak water levels for the year and are predicted to decline. Lakes Michigan-Huron set another new monthly mean record high water level in July, however the water level is expected to slowly drop the rest of the year. Water levels on Lakes St. Clair, Erie and Ontario all continued to decline last month, with no new records set on those lakes in July. The water level of Lake Superior is expected to peak next month before entering its period of typical seasonal decline. “While we expect water levels to decline across most of the Great Lakes, levels still remain extremely high,” said John Allis, chief of the Great Lakes Hydraulics and Hydrology Office, Detroit District.
