Maj. Gen. Mark Quander, commander of the U.S. Army Corps of Engineers Great Lakes and Ohio River Division, visits the former Guterl Steel Site in Lockport, New York, May 29, 2024. Guterl was commissioned by the Atomic Energy Commission to mill over 25 million pounds of uranium metals and over 30 thousand pounds of thorium metals between 1948 to 1956, and is now a Formerly Utilized Sites Remedial Action Program site, with plans to be cleaned up by the Buffalo District.
