Today, Assistant Secretary of the Army for Civil Works Adam R. Telle announced a major initiative, “Building Infrastructure, Not Paperwork,” for the Army’s Civil Works program. “Building Infrastructure, Not Paperwork” will provide greater focus on the U.S. Army Corps of Engineers’ (USACE) core Civil Works missions, while minimizing non-core programs, direct funding to priority water resources projects that will provide the greatest benefits to the nation, shorten permitting timelines, and reduce or eliminate extraneous regulations and paperwork that slow USACE’s delivery of Civil Works projects and programs.

(Feb. 26, 2025) – As part of National Engineers Week, the U.S. Army Corps of Engineers Nashville District recognized its newest licensed professionals yesterday by affixing nameplates onto the “Registered Professional Personnel” board as a record of achievement for all to see at the district headquarters.

Col. Daniel J. Herlihy, commander of the Great Lakes and Ohio River Division, visited the Nashville District to gain an in-depth understanding of its complex infrastructure projects by speaking directly with the people managing them. His tour included a stop at Center Hill Dam, where a critical spillway gate replacement is underway in partnership with American Bridge Company to ensure public safety, and the Chickamauga Lock, where a new lock is being built to significantly increase navigation efficiency. Throughout the visit, Herlihy emphasized that the success of these modernizations depends on the quality of the people and strong partnerships, recognizing several employees for their excellence and stating his priorities are to "continue to deliver, and to take care of each other.

Gabby Faltin is an Army engineer and first lieutenant in the U.S. Army Reserve who supports major infrastructure projects for the U.S. Army Corps of Engineers Sacramento District, moving between office coordination and on-site work at dams and flood risk management systems. Often the only Soldier on a civilian team, she combines technical expertise, adaptability, and a calm approach to solving complex problems that directly affect nearby communities. Her fascination with engineering began in childhood visits to Chicago, where curiosity about bridges and learning the Chicago River had been reversed sparked her career path. After ROTC, an Army scholarship, and years of work in the Omaha District, she now bridges military service and public infrastructure, helping protect regions while steadily building a career shaped by intentional goals rather than chance.
Caribbean District and Silver Jackets lead water summit for Puerto Rico’s water future

From aging infrastructure to rising flood risks and shifting rainfall patterns, Puerto Rico’s water systems are under growing pressure. Last week, more than 130 experts from across the Caribbean islands, the federal government, and academia, came together for the first ever Caribbean Water Resources Summit, hosted by the Army Corps of Engineers Caribbean District and the Silver Jackets Program. The summit brought scientists, agency leaders, nonprofits, and academics into one room to share data, strengthen partnerships, and collaborate on solutions that protect communities and ecosystems. From advanced modeling tools to discussions on energy, land use, and emergency response, the day highlighted how interconnected Puerto Rico’s water challenges truly are, and how essential coordinated action will be in the years ahead.
