  • Army Corps awards contract for Avalon and Stone Harbor beach nourishment

    The U.S. Army Corps of Engineers’ Philadelphia District has awarded a contract to Great Lakes Dredge & Dock Company of Oak Brook, IL for $28.8 million to conduct periodic nourishment of the Townsends Inlet to Cape May Inlet (Avalon & Stone Harbor) dune and beachfill project. The project is a joint effort between the U.S. Army Corps of Engineers, the New Jersey Department of Environmental Protection, and the boroughs of Avalon and Stone Harbor.

The contract is a joint effort between the U.S. Army Corps of Engineers and the Delaware Department of Natural Resources and Environmental Control.
  • A Review of Tidal Embayment Shoaling Mechanisms in the Context of Future Wetland Placement

    Abstract: Wetland construction in tidally influenced embayments is a strategy for beneficial use of sediment dredged from nearby navigation channels. These projects have the potential to alter basin morphology, tidal hydrodynamics, and shoaling trends. This special report provides a broad review of the literature related to engineering-induced changes in tidal range, salinity, tidal prism, tidal asymmetry, and other known causes of shoaling. Each potential shoaling mechanism is then evaluated in the context of wetland placement to provide a foundation for future beneficial use research. Based on a compilation of worldwide examples, wetland placement may reduce tidal amplitude and enhance ebb current dominance, thus reducing shoaling rates in the channels. However, constructed wetlands could also reduce the embayment’s tidal prism and cause accelerated shoaling relative to the pre-engineered rate. Because constructed wetlands are often created in conjunction with navigation channel dredging, the system’s morphologic response to wetland construction is likely to be superimposed upon its response to channel deepening, and the net effect may vary depending on a variety of system- specific parameters. Planning for future wetland placements should include an evaluation of local hydrodynamic behavior considering these factors to predict site-specific response.

    VICKSBURG, Miss. – On November 16, 2022, the Dredge Dubuque departed the Vicksburg Harbor for a critical dredging mission along the Red River in response to low water conditions.
  • Corps of Engineers expedites St. Joseph Harbor dredging after vessel touches bottom

    DETROIT – The U.S. Army Corps of Engineers, Detroit District awards $1.3 million dredging contract to King Co., Inc, of Holland, Michigan Nov. 17 to dredge St. Joseph Harbor. Shoaling at the St. Joseph Harbor caused a vessel to touch bottom near the north side of the harbor entrance in October. Survey crews from the Detroit District’s Grand Haven Resident Office surveyed the outer harbor October 21. “The survey indicated a significant shoal of up to 10 feet from the north side of the outer navigation channel through the center of the channel,” Elizabeth Wilkinson, Grand Haven Resident Engineer said. “The channel is restricted but was not closed to navigation traffic.”
  • USACE Vicksburg District responds to historically low water conditions on lower Mississippi River

    VICKSBURG, Miss. – The U.S. Army Corps of Engineers (USACE) Vicksburg District is responding to historically low water conditions on the Lower Mississippi River by dredging the channel, conducting surveys, and monitoring river stages. During a temporary closure to navigation near Rosedale, Mississippi, from Oct. 27 at 4:00 p.m. to Oct. 29, the USACE Vicksburg District Dredge Jadwin will work to clear the channel. Depending on the dredge progress during the initial closure, additional closures may be needed in order to complete the work.
  • NOTICE TO BOATERS: Sandusky Harbor Dredging Sediment Pipeline Location Change

    Michigan-based Luedtke Engineering began dredging Sandusky Harbor on September 18. Due to shallow water levels, they have had to extend the sediment pump-out pipeline. Boaters should go out to the navigation channel before heading out into the lake to avoid dredge operations. Please see attached map of new area.
  • Corps of Engineers seeks public review and comment for proposed maintenance dredging of Sawpit Creek

    The U.S. Army Corps of Engineers, Jacksonville District, seeks public review and comment on its Environmental Assessment in regard to proposed maintenance dredging of the federally authorized Atlantic Intracoastal Waterway (AIWW) channel, settling basins and advance maintenance areas (AMA) in the waters of Sawpit Creek, the Amelia River and Nassau Sound, Florida. Comments must be received by Nov. 4, 2022, for consideration.

    The U.S. Army Corps of Engineers’ Philadelphia District has awarded a contract to Great Lakes Dredge & Dock Company of Oak Brook, IL for $21.5 million to conduct periodic nourishment of the Great Egg Harbor and Peck Beach, (Ocean City), NJ project in New Jersey. Work is the result of a partnership between the Army Corps’ Philadelphia District, the New Jersey Department of Environmental Protection, and Ocean City.
