HUNTINGTON, W.Va. -- Promoting STEM (science, technology, engineering, and mathematics) education is more than a passing trend for Derek Maxey and Don Whitmore, two registered professional engineers with the U.S. Army Corps of Engineers, Huntington District. Both quietly volunteer as guest lecturers at local universities, bringing their real-world experience and stories from the field to undergraduate students. Maxey, a mechanical engineer and Whitmore, a civil engineer, are committed to inspiring and mentoring tomorrow's engineers, they said.

Army Corps, U.S. Navy retrieve piece of Civil War ironclad from Savannah River
SAVANNAH, Ga.-- Archeologists working for the U.S. Army Corps of Engineers, Savannah District, aided by divers and salvage operations teams from the U.S. Navy, retrieved a 64-square-foot section of a Civil War ironclad warship from the bottom of the Savannah River here, the evening of Nov. 12.

ERDC researchers contribute to historic honor
A pair of researchers with the U.S. Army Engineer Research and Development Center have been recognized for their significant contributions to the Army’s selection as a 2012 Top 100 Global Innovators Award. Bartley Durst and Toney Cummins with the ERDC Geotechnical and Structures Laboratory were named two of the top 20 inventors in the Army for 2009-2011.

Going Green: Sustainable coastal North Carolina tidal marsh still thriving after 16 years
In 1996 Wilmington District biologists and engineers, with help from other North Carolina resource agencies, designed and constructed a former dredged material disposal island to offset impacts from construction of the Army Reserve Center in Morehead City, and turned it into a thriving coastal tidal marsh. Sixteen years later the marsh is a sustainable ecosystem that has exceeded the Corps' goals and expectations.

WIESBADEN, Germany - A live video stream of eighth-grade physics students displayed on Jason Cade's computer screen. After a quick audio check, Cade, a U.S. Army Corps of Engineers Europe District project manager and mining engineer, with the assistance of his colleagues, used face-to-face video conferencing to teach a lesson on roller coaster engineering to Wiesbaden Middle School students recently.
