Groundbreaking Ceremony for Phase 5 Stilling Basin of the Bluestone Dam Safety Assurance Mega-Project
Recently the Huntington District celebrated the beginning of the Phase 5 Stilling Basin of the Bluestone Dam Safety Assurance Mega-Project by holding a ground breaking ceremony. The ceremony featured speeches by Colonel Jason Evers, Major General Robert Whittle, Frank Piedimonte, President and COO, Brayman Construction Corp; Mayor Jack Scott of the City of Hinton; Senator Shelly Moore-Capito; Congresswoman Carol Miller; Mara Boggs, State Director for Senator Joe Manchin III; and, Mike Hall, Chief of Staff to Governor Jim Justice.

Fort Worth District’s employee USACE Dam Safety Professional of the Year award
Sarwenaj Ashraf, or Sarvi Ashraf as she is known in the Fort Worth District, has won the United States Army Corps of Engineers (USACE) Dam Safety Professional of the year award. Although her home station is in the Fort Worth District, Ashraf is the USACE Dam Safety Program Manager. The Dam Safety Program ensures that the dams deliver their intended benefits while reducing risks to people, property and the environment through continuous assessment, communication and management. USACE dams and levees are a part of America’s landscape and provide critical benefits to the communities around them.

$7.5 billion federal credit program opens for dam safety projects
The U.S. Army Corps of Engineers is accepting applications for a new $7.5 billion credit assistance program, the Corps Water Infrastructure Financing Program (CWIFP), for dam safety projects. By providing low-cost, long-term, flexible loans for dam safety projects, the CWIFP will accelerate non-federal investment in the nation’s dam infrastructure.

Corps will conduct inspections of Orwell Dam

Corps to host public meeting for the Mojave Dam Master Plan revision
The current master plans are in need of revision to address changes in regional land use, population, outdoor recreation trends, and USACE management policy. Key topics to be addressed in the revised master plans include revised land classifications, revised natural, cultural, and recreational resource management objectives, recreation facility needs, and special topics such as off highway vehicle use and threatened and endangered species habitat.

USACE Galveston District releases Buffalo Bayou Tributaries Resiliency Study Interim Report
GALVESTON, Texas – Today the U.S. Army Corps of Engineers (USACE) Galveston District is releasing an Interim Report for the Buffalo Bayou and Tributaries Resiliency Study (BBTRS). The purpose of BBTRS is to identify, evaluate and recommend actions to address conditions that have changed flood risks around the Addicks and Barker reservoirs since their construction in the 1940s.

Green Peter Dam less risky after extensive studies, rehab and assessment
After years of extensive studies, a risk assessment and recent rehabilitation of spillway gates, officials re-classify Green Peter Dam, near Sweet Home, Ore., as a Low Risk dam. Recent rehabilitation of the spillway tainter gates for trunnion friction and overall reliability have improved the risk characterization. These efforts along with a detailed review of the dam’s hazards, performance and consequences, helped decrease risks from the last assessment, which rated Green Peter as a High Risk dam.

Dam Safety Day recognized in Kansas City District
Living with dams is a shared responsibility and requires constant assessment, continuous communication and engagement with local public and emergency management agencies. The Kansas City District, U.S. Army Corps of Engineers, operates and manages 18 dams in Missouri, Kansas, Nebraska, and Iowa. Flood control serves as the primary purpose of these dams. Corps reservoirs provide many other benefits including recreation activities.

Corps to resume flows Lake Okeechobee to Caloosahatchee
With Lake Okeechobee continuing its ascent, the U.S. Army Corps of Engineers Jacksonville District plans to resume flows to the Caloosahatchee River starting tomorrow (Sept. 19).
