Low-head dams are smaller humanmade structures built in and across waterways. Found across the United States, these dams were built to regulate water for a variety of purposes such as to operate mills, generate power, and deepen waterways to recreate. But what's notable about these dams is the dangers they pose - known as downing machines, low-head dams have killed more than 1,400 people.
