USACE to begin construction on alternate care facilities in Virginia
The Norfolk District, U.S. Army Corps of Engineers has received three mission assignments from FEMA to construct alternate care facilities in Northern Virginia, the Hampton Roads region and in the Richmond, Virginia area.

Engineers continue working through weekend to bring alternate care facility online
A multidisciplinary team of Memphis District engineers spent the weekend preparing documents that outline the scope of work required to convert the Gateway Shopping Center on Jackson Avenue into a COVID-19 Alternate Care Facility (ACF).

USACE adds 4 additional locations to alternate care sites in NY, NM
The U.S. Army Corps of Engineers added four new contracts on to construct alternate care sites in response to COVID-19. The new locations will be in Queens, NY; Bronx, NY; Staten Island, NY, and Albuquerque, NM. The contracts were issued on Friday and Saturday. USACE has completed 756 assessments of possible locations for alternate care sites. USACE is working in support of the FEMA Federal Emergency Management Agency - and in coordination with other federal, state, local and tribal partners – in response to the COVID-19 Pandemic. The Jan. 7 Los Angeles County wildfires debris removal operation was one of our largest, most challenging missions. More than 1,400 USACE personnel deployed from across the nation and from our district to support debris removal operations. /6

But we did not do this alone. The success of this important mission was the result of strong partnerships with FEMA, Cal OES, LA County, local governments and impacted communities. /5

To date, USACE has removed more than 2.6 million tons of debris — the equivalent of more than 218,000 truckloads. /4

We are proud of our efforts, alongside our partners, to rapidly come to the aid of our fellow citizens in their time of need. In just six months, more than 9,500 properties were cleared — making this the fastest, large-scale wildfire debris removal in USACE history. /3

After the devastating Los Angeles wildfires in January 2025, the U.S. Army Corps of Engineers was laser-focused on removing immediate hazards to public health and safety, and supporting economic recovery by removing structural ash, debris and foundations. /2

Fort Worth District evaluates sites for use as alternate care facilities
Fort Worth District, U.S. Army Corps of Engineers has assembled field assessment teams tasked with evaluating existing sites for the possible conversion into alternate-care-facilities in Texas. The Corps’ teams, at the request of FEMA and the State of Texas, are evaluating facilities across the state. They are working closely with FEMA, state and local partners to best facilitate a quick response should the need arise to have additional alternate-care-facilities constructed.
