What began as a dredging operation to deepen Savannah Harbor evolved into what might be one of the most significant underwater archaeological discoveries in Savannah’s history, and now, those artifacts have officially been unveiled at their new home, the Savannah History Museum.

Revolutionary War cannon on display at Savannah History Museum soon

SAVANNAH, Ga. – The U.S. Army Corps of Engineers’ Savannah District, in partnership with Coastal Heritage Society, are pleased to announce 17 of the Revolutionary War-era cannon found in the Savannah River during the Savannah Harbor Expansion Project dredging operations in 2021-2022, will officially be on display at the Savannah History Museum July 2, 2026, at 4 p.m.

Dredging Chief Receives Maritime Person of the Year Award

Commodore keen on cannon collection

Joint project begins process to restore Savannah saltmarsh habitat

SAVANNAH, Ga. – Members of the U.S. Army Corps of Engineers, Savannah and Jacksonville Districts began collaborating in February on a restoration project at the Dredged Material Containment Area 1S, located on the Savannah River near Port Wentworth, Georgia, as part of the mitigation requirements associated with the Savannah Harbor Expansion Project.

Dredging complete for Savannah Harbor Expansion Project

SAVANNAH, Ga. - The U.S. Army Corps of Engineers, Savannah District, announced the deepening portion of the Savannah Harbor, and the associated shipping channel, were completed March 8. This project is part of a 23-year effort to deepen the Savannah River from an authorized depth of 42 feet to 47 feet and extend it seven miles further into the Atlantic.
