• Kingwood Marina developers request temporary permit suspension

    (May 1, 2019) After receiving 727 public comments, Kingwood Marina developer, Romerica Investments, LLC, asked Corps regulators on April 24, to temporarily suspend an Individual Permit Application (SWG-2016-00384). Romercia’s environmental consultants said in a letter to Corps regulators, they made the request based on the large volume of comments provided by the U.S. Army Corps of Engineers (USACE) on March 28.
  • 19-044 Boise River flows to increase on Thursday

    BOISE, Idaho -- The U.S. Army Corps of Engineers will increase flows through the City of Boise by 200 cubic feet per second (cfs) on Thursday, May 2. Currently, Boise River flows through town are approximately 6,620 cfs, as measured at the Glenwood Bridge gauge. Flows will reach approximately 6,820 cfs by late-morning on Thursday.

  • Corps reduces flows from Lake O

    The U.S. Army Corps of Engineers Jacksonville District continues to monitor conditions and is stepping down releases from Lake Okeechobee. Starting Saturday, May 4, the Corps will reduce the pulse release to the Caloosahatchee estuary to a 7-day average rate of 600 cubic feet per second (cfs) from the W.P. Franklin Lock and Dam (S-79). Flows to the St. Lucie estuary remain at zero cfs as measured at the St. Lucie Lock and Dam (S-80). This schedule will remain in effect until further notice. Additional runoff from rain in the Caloosahatchee and St. Lucie basins could occasionally result in flows that exceed one or both targets.

Beyond engineering, USACE employs a variety of experts in their field: lawyers, contracting specialists, safety managers and even divers in some cases. Project managers however, require generalization rather than specialization. Keeping projects that run into the hundreds of millions on schedule, within budget and meeting customer expectations means having oversight of budgets, schedules and hundreds of other moving parts. Deanna Hardy, an interior designer with the Transatlantic Middle East District, was recently given the opportunity to experience both sides of that dynamic when she was offered the opportunity to be the lead project manager on a building renovation in the district’s headquarters.

    Transatlantic Middle East District employees Andrea Greene and Peter DeMattei were presented with the Army Civilian Service Commendation Medal during a surprise ceremony held at the TAD headquarters in Winchester, Va., on April 25, 2019. The Civilian Service Commendation Medal is the civilian equivalent of the Army Commendation Medal and is awarded for very specific levels of achievement by civilian employees.
