    On June 5, Honorable Lucian Niemeyer and representatives for the Missile Defense Agency, Air Force, U.S. Army Corps of Engineers and construction contractors gathered for a groundbreaking ceremony at Fort Greely near Delta Junction, Alaska. The event celebrated the start of construction for the $200 million Missile Field Four.

    A new era of military modernization was the theme during a visit to Alaska by one of the Department of Defense’s top officials.

    Building 2205 is state-of-the-art, three-stories and will accommodate 168 enlisted personnel. The facility was planned to support Red-Flag Alaska – a series of field training exercises in a simulated combat environment for a large amount of permanent and temporary personnel. However, an anticipated influx of about 1,200 airmen following the arrival of 54 F-35A Joint Strike Fighter jets in 2020 made the additional living quarters a critical need.

    New dormitory prepares Eielson for F-35 personnel influx

    The U.S. Army Corps of Engineers – Alaska District turned over a new dormitory to the Air Force Dec. 21 at Eielson Air Force Base near Fairbanks.

    Brig. Gen. Jeffrey Milhorn, deputy commanding general-support for Joint Task Force 505 during Operation Sahyogi Haat and commanding general of the Pacific Ocean Division, visited the Corps-built water well located at the Nepal Armed Police Force Headquarters in Halchowk, Kathmandu. Milhorn observed that the well survived the earthquake with minor repairs and provided water for more than 5,000 displaced citizens. The district managed the $1.3 million installation of seven wells, which range from 500 feet to 1,000 feet deep. Each one is complete with more than 6,500 gallons of water storage capacity, filtration system and emergency generator. Located throughout Kathmandu, each well can provide potable water for up to 15,000 people following a disaster event.

    Humanitarian assistance projects provide disaster relief in Nepal

    The U.S. Army Corps of Engineers (USACE) recently completed two humanitarian assistance construction projects that are now providing critical support services to the population of Kathmandu, Nepal, in the wake of the deadly earthquakes that struck in April and May.

    Corps promotes engineering skills at local schools

    "It's the future," said Steve Grabowski, an Anchorage School District teacher, about the importance of exposing science, technology, engineering and mathematics education to elementary students. Members of the U.S. Army Corps of Engineers -- Alaska District visited three of Grabowski's fifth and sixth grade classes between Nov.18 and 22 at Mount Spurr, Ursa Major and Ursa Minor elementary schools on Joint Base Elmendorf-Richardson.

  • Corps partners with local brigade to expand training opportunities for Soldiers

    With every nugget of engineering expertise his mentors share with him, Sgt. 1st Class Ron Albert's confidence grows as he performs his temporary duties with the U.S. Army Corps of Engineers -- Alaska District. Through a partnership between the district and 2nd Engineer Brigade, both located on Joint Base Elmendorf -- Richardson, the Engineer Corps is preparing a stronger Soldier and Army through the Arctic Trailblazer Internship Program.

    Mooring points small projects yield big rewards in rural Alaska

    Pipes and chains sticking out of the ground are hardly a flashy engineering feat, but the U.S. Army Corps of Engineers -- Alaska District is frugally designing and quickly delivering mooring points to some of Alaska's most rural communities located on the Yukon and Kuskokwim rivers. Since its inception, the project offers strong potential for major transportation, environmental and economic benefits.

    The Essayons performed a dredging mission for the Corps’s Alaska District from May 12 through June 18 in the Cook Inlet Navigation Channel. The crew dredged 2.8 million cubic yards of sand in 35 days.
