The U.S. Army Engineer Research and Development Center (ERDC) and Hinds Community College recently signed an Education Partnership Agreement (EPA) to implement the “Partnership in Education” program, an initiative that encourages study in STEM and professional areas of interest such as unmanned aerial vehicles and those enhancing the engineering, technological and scientific areas at ERDC’s seven laboratories.

As efforts to protect the majestic bald eagle continue to evolve, one unexpected ally has emerged in the fight for their survival: man-made lakes. These artificial bodies of water, often created for flood control, agricultural, and recreational purposes, have become vital habitats for bald eagles and other birds of prey, supporting their nesting, feeding and breeding needs. Historically, bald eagle populations in North America have faced serious threats due to habitat destruction, the detrimental effects of pesticides like DDT and other factors. While these stunning birds have made a significant recovery thanks to federal protections and conservation efforts, their future still depends on the availability of suitable habitats.

A large kite, supported by over 50 members of a local Zama City fire department, takes flight during the Sagamihara ‘Giant Kite festival’ May 4th, 2023. Held traditionally since the early 1800s, coinciding with the ‘Golden Week’ holidays of Greenery Day and Children’s Day, the festival pits Zama and Sagamihara cities against each other as each team tries to hoist their massive kite into the air for the longest possible time.
