      <description>The U.S. Army Corps of Engineers’ top general signed a report April 22 – on Earth Day – recommending a plan to restore more than 600 acres of valuable riparian habitat within the largest riparian forest in Southern California.

Lt. Gen. Scott Spellmon, the Corps’ commanding general and 55th U.S. Army chief of engineers, signed the Chief of Engineer’s Report for the Prado Basin Ecosystem Restoration and Water Conservation Feasibility Study at the Corps’ headquarters in Washington, D.C. The project is headed by the Corps’ Los Angeles District, in partnership with the Orange County Water District.

Lt. Gen. Scott Spellmon, the Corps’ commanding general and 55th U.S. Army chief of engineers, signed the Malibu Creek Ecosystem Restoration project chief’s report Nov. 13 at the Corps’ headquarters in Washington D.C., which elevates the report to the Assistant Secretary of the Army for Civil Works, U.S. Office of Management and Budget, and to Congress for consideration of project authorization.&lt;br/&gt;

      <description>The U.S. Army Corps of Engineers Los Angeles District and the California National Guard are partnering to conduct a Super Sand Bag Placement functional exercise at the Whittier Narrows Dam in Montebello, California. The exercise will include the use of a U.S. Army UH-60M Black Hawk helicopter flown by a crew with the California National Guard's Army Aviation Support Facility No. 1, based in Joint Forces Training Base, Los Alamitos, California. The California National Guard will conduct a sling-load operation that will place sandbags into a simulated breach of the levee system at Whittier Narrows Dam to demonstrate the joint flood-fighting capabilities of the Corps of the California National Guard. &lt;br/&gt;

      <description>Sepulveda Dam is the western-most of the Corps of Engineers’ dams operated by the Los Angeles District in the Los Angeles County Drainage Area flood control system.

The purpose of the project is to collect flood runoff from the uncontrolled drainage areas upstream, store it temporarily and release it into the Los Angeles River at a rate that does not exceed the downstream channel capacity.&lt;br/&gt;
