U.S. Army Corps of Engineers waives day use fees at recreation areas in observance of America’s 250th birthday celebration

The U.S. Army Corps of Engineers today announced that it will waive day use fees at its more than 2,800 USACE-operated recreation areas nationwide in support of America’s 250th birthday celebration, July 3-5.

The J. Strom Thurmond Lake Project experienced extensive damage to all 51 USACE operated recreation areas as a result of Hurricane Helene's movement through the area in September 2025, including what was originally estimated to be 500,000 cubic yards of vegetative debris such as hazardous trees and stumps. This brought the recreation mission at the project to an almost complete stop for the 2025 recreation season.

USACE and FIND Outdoors Enter into CCSCMA at Carters Lake

Carters Lake is demonstrating the value of innovative recreation partnerships through the first recreation season of the Challenge Cost Sharing Cooperative Management Agreement (CCSCMA) with FIND Outdoors, a nonprofit organization dedicated to connecting people with the outdoors. FIND Outdoors’ mission is to inspire people to connect with nature through well-managed outdoor recreation sites, campgrounds, visitor centers, guided tours, and educational opportunities for all ages and abilities. This shared mission is now being applied across the CCSCMA parks at Carters Lake, and early implementation is already providing valuable lessons for the broader USACE recreation program.
