Sustainability in Contingency Operations CXS

The U.S. Army Corps of Engineers Transatlantic Division's Middle East District is the Center of Expertise in Sustainability (CXS) for design of (non-permanent) facilities in contingency environments, to reduce energy footprint of facilities and to use locally sustainable materials and equipment.

This is being achieved by incorporating passive energy conservation measures like building orientation, continuous insulation around the building envelope, thermal breaks, and using simple efficient building systems with renewable energy options such as geo-thermal heat exchange systems and photo-voltaic cell cladding. A major effort in not only reducing the carbon footprint, but reducing the load on logistics is the incorporation of earth construction technology.
