The mission of the Lighting (Natural Electrical) Design Center of Expertise in Sustainability (CXS) is to provide knowledge creation and sharing throughout USACE in the use of sustainable lighting and natural electrical solutions in facility designs. Next to heating, ventilation, and air conditioning (HVAC) systems, lighting is the second largest component of a building’s energy consumption. It is imperative that we learn how to incorporate efficient lighting and daylighting strategies in our facilities in order to reduce energy consumption.
Daylighting and electrical lighting systems are an important part of the building’s energy model and must be examined thoroughly during the design process.
The Lighting CXS provides technical guidance on how to utilize commercially available lighting (daylighting and electrical lighting) software for developing lighting models and simulations to determine the most efficient lighting strategies in achieving a high performance sustainable building.
