    Imagine it’s pouring rain for days on end, and you live near the Mississippi River. Not a far-fetched idea for many. With rain comes rising river waters and possible flooding. To prepare for such events, monitoring the river is essential but much harder to do if the levee surface isn’t safe for travel. That’s why projects like this one are important to the people living near and around the White River Backwater Levee.

    U.S. Army Engineer Research and Development Center assists Kansas City Corps with hydrodynamic dredge

    In a demonstration of collaboration and innovation, the U.S. Army Engineer Research and Development Center deployed an experimental asset and team of experts to the Missouri River in the Kansas City District, U.S. Army Corps of Engineers, to assist in dredging shallow areas called shoals in the navigation river channel.

    A 25-year employee of the U.S. Army Corps of Engineers, Omaha District, was awarded the Omaha-Lincoln Federal Executive Association 2019, Federal Employee Leadership Award in the Managerial/Supervisor/Leader of the Year category.

    Winter doesn't put freeze on flood repairs

    When the unprecedented and historical flooding started in the Missouri and Platte River basins in March 2019, the U.S. Army Corps of Engineers (USACE) Omaha District responded immediately. Within hours, the District, led by the Readiness Branch, was developing plans and sending materials out to fight the flood and provide assistance to communities within harm’s way.

    USACE responds to Lake Ontario flooding

    U.S. Army Corps of Engineers (USACE), Buffalo District, technical field teams have visited 13 Lake Ontario coast sites in response to emergency flood efforts. New York State Governor Andrew Cuomo formally requested Corps of Engineers assistance on May 9 and initiated additional interagency coordination to supplement the state’s emergency response to record water levels.

    SUMMERSVILLE, W.Va.-- One of the most important missions the U.S. Army Corps of Engineers carries out is reducing the risk of flooding. The Summersville Dam here, the second largest earthen dam east of the Mississippi River, is designed to do just that by holding back water during heavy rain events.

That's the warning delivered by a new, comprehensive report on flood risk throughout the state, developed by the California Department of Water Resources and the U.S. Army Corps of Engineers' South Pacific Division.
