  • Initial public scoping a success for Lewis and Clark Lake, Gavins Point Dam master plan update

    Outdoor recreation enthusiasts will reap the future benefits at Lewis and Clark Lake recreation area in Yankton, South Dakota, after the Gavins Point Dam project master plan update, currently underway, is complete — the plan was last revised in 2004.

  • Forecast runoff for upper Missouri River basin lower after warm spring

    Gavins Point releases are forecast to remain near 35,000 cubic feet per second through the month of April. The upper Missouri River basin March runoff fell in line with the March 1 forecast. Runoff above Sioux City, Iowa was 5.5 million acre feet, which is almost two times average. The above average runoff was primarily due to plains snow melting over heavily saturated soils. “The warmer-than-normal temperatures melted most of the plains snow in the eastern and central Dakotas. Along with the steady, but near average, rate of snow accumulation in the mountains, the projected upper Missouri River basin runoff for 2020 has been slightly reduced,” said John Remus, chief of the U.S. Army Corps of Engineers’ (Corps) Missouri River Basin Water Management Division.

  • Vegetation control to begin on Lewis & Clark Lake

    The U.S. Army Corps of Engineers will conduct vegetation management activities on sandbars in the upper portion of Lewis & Clark Lake during October 2018.

  • Draft EA for surplus water use at Lewis and Clark Lake, NE available for public comment

    A draft environmental assessment for a surplus water request at Lewis and Clark Lake in Nebraska is currently available for public review. The draft EA evaluates the use of surplus water and the environmental impacts of installing and operating a water intake structure to withdraw 1.33 acre-feet per year for domestic use on private property. Comments must be received or postmarked by July 30, 2018.

  • Spillway gate repairs mean more road closures at Gavins Point Dam

    Crest Road, the road that crosses the Gavins Point Dam will be closed from 8 a.m. Monday, August 11 through 3:30 p.m. Friday, August 15. This closure will include nighttime hours. The public is asked to plan on an alternate route of travel during this time. The closure is a result of the inspection, repair and painting of the spillway gates at Gavins Point Dam. There will be periodic closures throughout duration of the construction, which will continue into the fall.
