    Omaha District recognized with distinguished industry awards

    The U.S. Army Corps of Engineers, Omaha District received multiple awards from industry stakeholders for performance in construction, small business contracting, safety and public affairs. Receiving these awards is credited to overall teamwork, the culture, and recognition of individuals who have made a significant impact in contributing to the overall success of the USACE mission during fiscal year 2020.

    If you were to ask a person to define the job of the U.S. Army Corps of Engineers (USACE), the answers you received would be as unique as the individuals in your sample. We took this question to a small group of people ranging from active-duty Soldiers to restauranteurs and stay at home moms. Here are some of the answers we received.

    Fate and flows: Oregon native keeps water moving through state

    PORTLAND, Ore. -- Salina Hart dreams about water. It makes sense: she grew up on the water, and often went tubing down the local Clackamas River, the North Santiam and the Long Tom. Even after the massive local floods of 1996 swelled the river, inundated her home and took out most of her neighborhood, she still loved water.

    The completed alternate care facilty at Kalispell, Mont., has 98 patient care rooms, seven nurse’s stations, four restrooms, three pharmacies (which can be converted into patient care rooms) and a medical supply storage room.

    The U.S. Army Corps of Engineers, Omaha District, completed construction on an alternate care facility in Kalispell, Montana, May 24, two days earlier than required. The ACF also came in more than 10% under budget.

    From the comfort of their own homes, the U.S. Army Corps of Engineers Pittsburgh District staff are finding innovative ways to adapt and embrace the challenges of coronavirus. 
  • Lt. Col. Jonathan Klink, commander, Pittsburgh District, follows CDC guidelines for the removal and decontamination of personally protective equipment following an assessment of a potential Alternate Care Facility in northeastern Ohio, Monday. Currently, Pittsburgh District is on standby for mission assignments to begin the process of preparing ACFs for action at two previously assessed sites.

    The U.S. Army Corps of Engineers Nashville District places concrete for the first monolith on the Chickamauga Lock Replacement Project Oct. 17, 2019 on the Tennessee River in Chattanooga, Tennessee. At the Chickamauga Lock Replacement Project, aa Tennessee Valley Authority project, the Nashville District is currently executing the lock chamber contract for the new 110-foot by 600-foot navigation lock, which includes 285,000 cubic yards of reinforced concrete.     Afghanistan District is Thankful for its Volunteers

    Five things Army engineers do to protect the environment

    The U.S. Army Corps of Engineers manages one of the largest environmental missions in the nation. At the North Atlantic Division in Brooklyn, N.Y., engineers focus on five main environmental areas: Restoring degraded ecosystems, constructing sustainable facilities, managing natural resources and waterways and cleaning up contaminated sites from formerly used defense sites.

    Paying it Forward: USACE Engineers Serve as Mentors, Guest Lecturers

    HUNTINGTON, W.Va. -- Promoting STEM (science, technology, engineering, and mathematics) education is more than a passing trend for Derek Maxey and Don Whitmore, two registered professional engineers with the U.S. Army Corps of Engineers, Huntington District. Both quietly volunteer as guest lecturers at local universities, bringing their real-world experience and stories from the field to undergraduate students. Maxey, a mechanical engineer and Whitmore, a civil engineer, are committed to inspiring and mentoring tomorrow's engineers, they said.

    Army Corps, U.S. Navy retrieve piece of Civil War ironclad from Savannah River

    SAVANNAH, Ga.-- Archeologists working for the U.S. Army Corps of Engineers, Savannah District, aided by divers and salvage operations teams from the U.S. Navy, retrieved a 64-square-foot section of a Civil War ironclad warship from the bottom of the Savannah River here, the evening of Nov. 12.

    FORT IRWIN, Calif.--The U.S. Army Corps of Engineers Los Angeles district sent a five-person team of engineering professionals to Fort Irwin to assess damage soon after a monsoon storm hit the post Aug 25.

    ERDC researchers contribute to historic honor

    A pair of researchers with the U.S. Army Engineer Research and Development Center have been recognized for their significant contributions to the Army’s selection as a 2012 Top 100 Global Innovators Award. Bartley Durst and Toney Cummins with the ERDC Geotechnical and Structures Laboratory were named two of the top 20 inventors in the Army for 2009-2011.

    Going Green: Sustainable coastal North Carolina tidal marsh still thriving after 16 years

    In 1996 Wilmington District biologists and engineers, with help from other North Carolina resource agencies, designed and constructed a former dredged material disposal island to offset impacts from construction of the Army Reserve Center in Morehead City, and turned it into a thriving coastal tidal marsh. Sixteen years later the marsh is a sustainable ecosystem that has exceeded the Corps' goals and expectations.

    For eroding island, engineers' efforts start with models

    NORFOLK, Va. -- Waterman and residents on the tiny, sinking island of Tangier worry every time the winds blow through the fishing community at more than 30 miles per hour. The island, located in the Chesapeake Bay just below the Maryland and Virginia border, is sinking and eroding away -- a dilemma that's expedited by churning storm waters.

    Web conferencing brings Army engineers to DoDDS classroom

    WIESBADEN, Germany - A live video stream of eighth-grade physics students displayed on Jason Cade's computer screen. After a quick audio check, Cade, a U.S. Army Corps of Engineers Europe District project manager and mining engineer, with the assistance of his colleagues, used face-to-face video conferencing to teach a lesson on roller coaster engineering to Wiesbaden Middle School students recently.

    KANDAHAR AIRFIELD, Afghanistan -- Afghan engineers and linemen in Helmand province just got a major helping hand thanks to a U.S. Army Corps of Engineers program that taught Da Afghaninstan Breshna Sherkat (Afghanistan's electric utility company) employees how to safely operate the new electric utility trucks donated to them by the United States in early December.
