ALEXANDRIA, VA — The Department of Defense Education Activity and the U.S. Army Corps of Engineers are partnering to advance Science, Technology, Engineering and Math in DoDEA classrooms around the world. The initiative became official at a Partnership Agreement Signing Ceremony held May 20 at Ashurst Elementary School located on Marine Corps Base Quantico. The partnership is the first STEM initiative between the U.S. Army and DoDEA. It leverages the missions, talents and resources of both DoDEA and USACE to advance STEM in elementary and secondary school curriculum.

With some unusual engineering tools, like dry spaghetti and marshmallows, plus a dollop of science enthusiasm, an Albuquerque District Teammate is spreading the STEM word for an elementary school on the Zia Pueblo in New Mexico.

In support of the Army Corps of Engineers'  STEM initiative, four Buffalo District team members put on a "Flash Training" event for teachers of Mullen Elementary School, Tonawanda, NY, April 18, 2013 The four science activities demonstrated were: Flower Pressing, Wetlands Demonstration, Making Silly Putty and What is a Glacier.

Thomas Mun, who is an electrical engineer at the Pacific Ocean Division, U.S. Army Corps of Engineers, logs on to the eCybermission website. Mun was a volunteer virtual judge for the 2012/2013 eCybermission program competition. The U.S. Army-sponsored program is designed to share the importance of science, technology, engineering and mathematics (STEM) education with America's youth--tomorrow's leaders. Mun evaluated 65 student projects, helping students understand real-life application of STEM fields.

The 2013 Black Engineer of the Year Award (BEYA) Conference featured many talented speakers from the Science, Technology, Engineering, and Mathematics (STEM) arenas, such as the award winners and leaders in the academic, federal, military, and private sectors.  This year’s conference, held earlier in February, was at the Marriott Wardman Park Hotel in Northwest, Washington D.C.
